(see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/weather\/news\/2007-01-04-dc-warmth_x.htm\"><em>USAToday<\/em> article<\/a>, Jan. 4, 2007)\u00a0 It may have been extra-warm in many parts of the USA in December, but lots of places are now having the coldest nights of this winter as we approach the ides of March.\u00a0\u00a0 This chill makes it especially important to remind ourselves how soon we&#8217;ll be enjoying those cheery harbingers of Spring &#8212; cherry blossoms <em>and<\/em> cherry blossom festivals.\u00a0 Two major North American festivals will soon take place:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouvercherryblossomfestival.com\/\">2007 Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival<\/a> [VCBF], in British Columbia, Canada, which\u00a0&#8220;is scheduled to kick off the season on March 22,&#8221; and will last a week.\u00a0 Linda Poole is its Creative Director.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalcherryblossomfestival.org\/cms\/index.php?id=390\">National Cherry Blossom Festival<\/a>\u00ae in Washington, D.C., which will be held March 31 \u2013 April 15, and &#8220;is an annual two-week, citywide event featuring daily cultural performances, sporting events, arts &amp; crafts demonstrations and other special events.&#8221;\u00a0 This morning (March 8), festival organizers held a <a href=\"http:\/\/nationalcherryblossomfestival.org\/cms\/fileadmin\/user_upload\/2007_Press_Releases\/Press_Release_-_Press_Conference_FINAL.pdf\">press conference<\/a> to announce the calendar of events and the projected peak blossoming period.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>so far away &#8211;<br \/>\ncherry blossoms and the smile<br \/>\nthat humbles them<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . by <em>dagosan<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/03\/VancouverTreePoole.gif\" alt=\"VancouverTreePoole\" width=\"90\" height=\"51\" \/> The blooming period of cherry blossoms can last as long as 14 days.\u00a0\u00a0 As we <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/03\/30\/dc-dreams-cherry-blossoms-at-their-peak\/\">said last year<\/a>, in a post about the DC festival, the contrast of the beauty and the impermanence of the blossoms have long made them the perfect subject for haiku (and for zen philosophers).\u00a0 Due to this traditional link between haiku and cherry blossoms, the two-year-old Vancouver festival has held a cherry blossom <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouvercherryblossomfestival.com\/vcbf\/haiku\">Haiku Invitational Contest<\/a> each of the past two years.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last year, seven of <em>f\/k\/a<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/guest-poet-archives-subject-index\/\">Honored Guest Poets<\/a> had haiku that were selected by the VCBF judges for special recognition.\u00a0 You can find their 2006 poems reprinted below the fold\u00a0of this\u00a0posting.<\/p>\n<p>. . . . . . . . .
