{"id":7308,"date":"2007-01-07T13:51:42","date_gmt":"2007-01-07T18:51:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/01\/07\/visiting-cornells-mann-library-hai"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:53","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:53","slug":"visiting-cornells-mann-library-haiku-page","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/01\/07\/visiting-cornells-mann-library-haiku-page\/","title":{"rendered":"visiting Cornell&#8217;s Mann Library haiku page"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"41\" alt=\"alkasG\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/01\/alkasG.jpg\" width=\"35\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0 Eschewing futile and empty gestures, the <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> Gang is not big on New Year&#8217;s resolutions.\u00a0 However, we <em>are <\/em>into improving, enjoying and appreciating life.\u00a0 Therefore, each of\u00a0your Editor&#8217;s\u00a0alter egos has made a promise to visit\u00a0Cornell University&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/haiku.mannlib.cornell.edu\/\"><strong>Mann Library&#8217;s Daily Haiku<\/strong><\/a> website frequently in 2007 &#8212; and you will surely benefit, too,\u00a0from our cyber visits to Ithaca.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the Mann haiku page, you&#8217;ll find a daily poem written by the featured haijin of the month.\u00a0 The project began over ten years ago, when library staffer <a href=\"http:\/\/haiku.mannlib.cornell.edu\/archives\/category\/author\/tom-clausen\">Tom Clausen<\/a> &#8212; now an <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$1733\"><em>f\/k\/a<\/em> Honored Guest Poet<\/a> &#8212; started posting a daily haiku in the elevator of the old Mann building.\u00a0 As their <a href=\"http:\/\/haiku.mannlib.cornell.edu\/about\/\">About page<\/a> notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Tom]\u00a0continues to post them near the New Book shelf of the Mann Library Addition. The poems are original works of an extended haiku community that includes many of his friends. This site is an effort to share these works with those of you visiting us on our Web site.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"80\" alt=\"ClausenTom\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/01\/clausenMug2.jpg\" width=\"52\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0 Yesterday, when we stopped at the Mann website for our first visit this year, we had\u00a0a very pleasant surprise: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/tom-clausen-archive\/\">Tom Clausen<\/a>&#8216;s own poetry is featured this month at the site.\u00a0 Tom is one of the four members of the Route 9 Haiku Group, and many of the poems were originally\u00a0seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.upstatedimsum.com\"><em>Upstate Dim Sum<\/em><\/a>, the group&#8217;s journal.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a sampling of the\u00a0poetry you would have found, had you visited <em>Mann Library Haiku<\/em> during the first week of 2007 (all the poems can be accessed through the site&#8217;s archives):<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>alone in the waiting room<br \/>\n\u00a0 checking the plant<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 for reality<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0one tree<br \/>\none bird, one song<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 the dusk<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0\u00a0 daybreak-<br \/>\nfrom the bread truck\u2019s roof<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 frost swirls<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>dawn\u2026<br \/>\nat the empty crossroads<br \/>\nthe signal blinks<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>power failure\u2026<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 moonlit clouds drift<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 by the window<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>. . . by <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3869\">Tom Clausen<\/a>.
