{"id":7157,"date":"2006-09-06T23:28:53","date_gmt":"2006-09-07T03:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/09\/06\/a-near-pundit-experience\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:55","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:55","slug":"a-near-pundit-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/09\/06\/a-near-pundit-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"a near-pundit experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been over three months since <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> started its punditry hiatus.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/legalblogwatch.typepad.com\/legal_blog_watch\/2006\/09\/shlepping_towar.html\">Some<\/a> weblogging colleagues have speculated that we&#8217;ve actually been busy all summer working on the new <em><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/shlep\">shlep<\/a><\/em> website. \u00a0The reality, however, is that the<em> f\/k\/a<\/em> Gang really needed the rest, and avoided all serious weblog activity for over ten weeks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2006\/09\/sleep%20logo%20neg.jpg\" alt=\"sleepLogo\" width=\"50\" height=\"51\" \/> Nonetheless, two recent posts by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legaline.com\/lawsites.html\">Bob Ambrogi<\/a> for <em><a href=\"http:\/\/legalblogwatch.typepad.com\/\">LegalBlogWatch<\/a><\/em> almost got us to peek our noses out from under our downtime blankies.\u00a0 We were tempted to opine, but decided to stay the course and stay (relatively) silent and supine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/legalblogwatch.typepad.com\/legal_blog_watch\/2006\/09\/firm_honored_fo.html\">Bob&#8217;s first post<\/a> explained\u00a0that &#8220;A New Zealand law firm that encourages its professionals to take naps if they are sleepy has won the country&#8217;s top work-life balance award.&#8221;\u00a0 If we were into that their kind of law, Meredith Connell sounds like our kind of firm: &#8220;offering workers flexible work hours to take account of personal commitments.&#8221;\u00a0 But, a nap can be as contagious as a yawn, and we&#8217;ve decided to continue to specialize in bedrest.<\/p>\n<p>The second Ambrogi post at <em>LegalBlogWatch<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/legalblogwatch.typepad.com\/legal_blog_watch\/2006\/09\/feminism_v_blog.html\">Feminism v. Blogging in Drag<\/a>, got our dander up, but our better angels have (mostly)\u00a0convinced our pudit devils to shush up.\u00a0 Bob gives an excellent summary of the brou-hah-hah started by the self-proclaimed &#8220;feminists&#8221; at the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/feministlawprofs.law.sc.edu\/?p=941\">Feminist Law Professors<\/a><\/em> weblog.\u00a0 Led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.sc.edu\/bartow\/\">Ann Bartow<\/a>, they launched an <a href=\"http:\/\/feministlawprofs.law.sc.edu\/?p=941\">attack<\/a> on Daniel Lat for holding an ERISA (pension) lawyer &#8220;<em>hottie contest<\/em>&#8221; at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abovethelaw.com\/2006\/08\/above_the_law_hotties_erisa_la.php#more\">AboveTheLaw.<\/a><\/em> That complaint broadened into an attack on males who did their <a href=\"http:\/\/lawandletters.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/on-being-female-blogger-and-yes-real.html\">weblogging in drag<\/a>, by taking on female persona (as Lat had done at his first weblog, <em>Article III Groupie<\/em>).\u00a0 As usual, Prof. <a href=\"http:\/\/althouse.blogspot.com\/2006\/09\/all-of-this-blogging-in-drag-is.html\">Ann Althouse seems<\/a> to take a more balanced perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Hepburn &amp; Tracy in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00004TJOD\/qid=1142972333\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/102-9892500-1392132?s=dvd&amp;v=glance&amp;n=130\">Adam&#8217;s Rib<\/a> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2006\/09\/AdamsRibCover.gif\" alt=\"Adam'sRib\" width=\"80\" height=\"89\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p>We are tempted to point out, yet again, our belief, that the neo-feminist penchant for humorless, picky, puritanical censorship does far more harm to their cause than the materials and (atavistic, often purposely and obviously puerile) attitudes they are deriding.\u00a0 We&#8217;re even tempted to link once again to our favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/gems\/ethicalesq\/CallahanBookStore.jpg\">Callahan feminist cartoon<\/a>.\u00a0 But, the Gang has built up a considerable amount of self control around this summer, and will merely suggest a paraphrase to <em>FemLawProf<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/feministlawprofs.law.sc.edu\/\">tagline<\/a>, which is &#8220;<em>No person is your friend who demands your silence<\/em>.&#8221;\u00a0 Perhaps Bartow <em>et al<\/em>. should at least consider that, for both genders, &#8220;No person is your<em> equal<\/em> who demands your silence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>p.s.<\/em> Hiatus or not, we&#8217;re almost looking forward to being called a stuffy, WASPy, male Harvard-type who just doesn&#8217;t &#8220;get it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>p.p.s.<\/em> Prof Bartow says &#8220;Possibly Lat doesn\u2019t understand that being celebrated for her looks is not known for being a ticket to career success in the legal world for a female attorney.&#8221;\u00a0 This statement is contrary to my personal observation, both in government and private practice.\u00a0 At the very least, good looks does <em>not <\/em>appear to be a negative career characteristic.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2006\/09\/bearyR.gif\" alt=\"BearyR\" width=\"60\" height=\"70\" \/> <span style=\"font-family: Arial\"> <\/span>Speaking of attractive, successful lawyers, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3719\"><strong>Roberta Beary<\/strong><\/a> just won 1st Place in the prestigious Harold <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsa-haiku.org\/haiku-brady.htm\">Brady Memorial Senryu Contest<\/a> for 2006, from the Haiku Society of America, with this senryu:<\/p>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><em>first date&#8211;<\/em><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><em>the small pile <\/em><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><em>of anchovies<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, did you come here for some haiku, too?\u00a0 Well,
