{"id":7099,"date":"2006-07-21T12:35:21","date_gmt":"2006-07-21T16:35:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/07\/21\/denise-has-us-thinking-about-caree"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:55","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:55","slug":"denise-has-us-thinking-about-careers-and-choices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/07\/21\/denise-has-us-thinking-about-careers-and-choices\/","title":{"rendered":"denise has us thinking about careers and choices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/06\/04\/aka-hiatus-pundit\/\">still<\/a> eschewing punditry and mostly skirting the blogosphere, but we couldn&#8217;t help notice that <a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/deniseMug.gif\">Denise Howell<\/a>\u00a0of <a href=\"http:\/\/bgbg.blogspot.com\/\"><em>Bag &amp; Baggage<\/em><\/a> fame &#8212; one of\u00a0the most liked, respected and admired lawyer-webloggers (and high-tech mommies) &#8212;\u00a0 was recently removed from her part-time post at the giant law firm Reed Smith.\u00a0 [See the reactions, <em>e.g.<\/em>, of <a href=\"http:\/\/legalblogwatch.typepad.com\/legal_blog_watch\/2006\/07\/bloggers_firing.html\">Bob<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/legalblogwatch.typepad.com\/legal_blog_watch\/2006\/07\/lessons_from_an.html\">Carolyn<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legalunderground.com\/2006\/07\/a_new_course_fo.html\">Evan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denniskennedy.com\/blog\/2006\/07\/is_this_what_they_teach_at_reed_smith_univers.html\">Dennis<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ernietheattorney.net\/ernie_the_attorney\/2006\/07\/the_love_filter.html\">Ernie<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>On July 15, 2006, <a href=\"http:\/\/bgbg.blogspot.com\/2006\/07\/have-aeron-will-travel.html\">Denise announced<\/a> her work status, while proclaiming that being <a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/TylerBday.jpg\">Tyler<\/a>&#8216;s mom was her &#8220;most important job,&#8221; and that her &#8220;professional roadmap henceforth will involve only things that are washed through a stringent &#8216;how much do I really love that?&#8217; filter, and can be comfortably accomplished in the limited, catch-as-catch-can hunks of time that fall serendipitously out of the sky during the course of my other &#8216;duties&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>. . . Tyler is job #1 . . . <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"67\" alt=\"tyler swinger\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2006\/08\/tyler%20swinger.jpg\" width=\"90\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> Gang wishes Denise all the best in her personal, parental,\u00a0and professional (ad)ventures.\u00a0 Instead of opining further, we&#8217;re going to post poems from <a href=\"http:\/\/haikuguy.com\/issa\/\">Kobayashi Issa<\/a>, one of Japan&#8217;s four Master Haiku Poets.\u00a0 Although he died almost two hundred years ago, we see some familiar themes in Issa&#8217;s haiku:\u00a0 what is work?\u00a0 <em>do<\/em> we all have choices?\u00a0 does gender matter?\u00a0\u00a0 who&#8217;s the boss?\u00a0\u00a0 what <em>are <\/em>our priorities?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\nsurprising the worker<br \/>\nin the field&#8230;<br \/>\nout-of-season blooms<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>gate&#8217;s cherry tree<br \/>\nall this flit-flit flitting<br \/>\nis work!<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\na migrating servant<br \/>\nlaid off<br \/>\nat age sixty<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>looks like boss frog<br \/>\nin the high seat<br \/>\ncroaking<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>the uproar in the servants&#8217;
