In case you’re new to f\/k\/a<\/em>, we wanted to point out that we’re<\/font> not always cranky and dissatisfied around here. <\/font> Here are a few positive things we saw online today:<\/font><\/p>\n

\"tiny Prof. Mark <\/font>Liberman at Language Log<\/em><\/font><\/font><\/a>, while discussing <\/font><\/p>\n

concocted debates<\/font><\/a> and some nasty stereotyping of scholars <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

(explained by White Bear<\/em> in “<\/font>are academics bitchy?<\/font><\/a>“), gives <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n

us all a great reminder of what it takes to make good<\/em> conver-<\/font><\/p>\n

sation. Mark says he appreciates discussions — even if <\/font><\/p>\n

virtual — that have “<\/font>the characteristics that Russell Baker <\/font><\/p>\n

identifies as ‘classic conversational etiquette’<\/em>:”<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"announcerSG\"<\/font><\/p>\n

\n

“Both participants listen attentively to each other; neither <\/font><\/p>\n

tries to promote himself by pleasing the other; both are <\/font><\/p>\n

obviously enjoying an intellectual workout; neither spoils <\/font><\/p>\n

the evening’s peaceable air by making a speech or letting <\/font><\/p>\n

disagreement flare into anger; they do not make tedious <\/font><\/p>\n

Mark concludes with a point that the the f\/k\/a<\/em> Gang needs to <\/font><\/p>\n

keep firmly in mind: “The blogging format tends to encourage <\/font><\/p>\n

speechifying, I guess; but otherwise, the people that I respect <\/font><\/p>\n

come out pretty well according to this standard of evaluation.” <\/font><\/p>\n

stressful tone at the Supreme Court under Chief Justice John Roberts<\/font><\/p>\n

The justices are so much more patient with counsel and eachother <\/font><\/p>\n

to be ready now to make some kind of affirmative presentation” in the <\/font><\/p>\n

opening minutes of an argument, he said. <\/font><\/p>\n

for energy conservation, it is very good to see that consumers (at least <\/font><\/p>\n
