{"id":5289,"date":"2006-04-29T13:22:22","date_gmt":"2006-04-29T17:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2006\/04\/29\/a-question-for-true-majority\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:58","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:58","slug":"a-question-for-true-majority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/04\/29\/a-question-for-true-majority\/","title":{"rendered":"a question for True Majority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a6563'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Why do the good people at <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/action.truemajority.org\/campaign\/dontbombiran?rk=31wwt1Y1IXrMW\">True Majority<\/A><\/EM>.org&nbsp;(whose goal<EM>&nbsp;f\/k\/a<\/EM> endorses) <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">need to whitewash the role of Democratic politicians in our Nation&#8217;s rush to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">war <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in Iraq?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/action.truemajority.org\/campaign\/dontbombiran?rk=31wwt1Y1IXrMW\"><EM><FONT color=\"black\">True Majority<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> has started a campaign to <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">bombard Democratic <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Leaders <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">with the demand that they &#8220;<A href=\"http:\/\/action.truemajority.org\/campaign\/dontbombiran\/explanation\"><FONT color=\"black\">Not Be Fooled Again<\/FONT><\/A>&#8221;&nbsp;regarding Iran. They &nbsp;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">should instead stand <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">up <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">against <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the Bush Administration&#8217;s plans and arguments <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">for <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">bombing Iran <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">over its <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">future nuclear weapons.&nbsp;&nbsp; Their <A href=\"http:\/\/action.truemajority.org\/campaign\/dontbombiran?rk=31wwt1Y1IXrMW\"><FONT color=\"black\"><EM>Petition<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A> to Democratic <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Leaders (such as Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid) says:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&#8220;bombfuse&#8221;&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>Please, use all the influence you&#8217;ve got to convince Democrats to <\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>find sufficient backbone to withstand any and all pressure from the <\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>President or anyone else to go to war with Iran.<\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">We wish we would could agree that they were duped and bullied &#8212;&nbsp; that it was&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">credulity and&nbsp;cowardice<\/FONT> <FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">that got Democrats to vote to authorize the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Iraq War.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">However, as&nbsp;we opined in&nbsp;&#8220;<A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/10\/23#a2556\"><FONT color=\"black\">may I speak frankly about my fellow Democrats?<\/FONT><\/A>&#8221;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(Oct. 24, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">2004, just prior to&nbsp;Election Day), it was <EM>political expediency<\/EM>&nbsp;that made <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Demo<\/FONT>crats vote to invade Iraq (and to remain silent for so long about the &#8220;post-<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">victory&#8221; situation in that country).&nbsp; They believed that going <FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">against a popular <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Pres<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">ident <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">and against public sentiment <EM>would cost them votes<\/EM>.&nbsp; So, they went <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">with the political tide.<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">rural interstate &#8212;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">all the cars <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">exit together <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">&nbsp;<FONT size=\"1\">&nbsp; <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$4630\"><FONT color=\"#ff0000\" size=\"1\">lee gurga<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT size=\"1\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; from <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.brooksbookshaiku.com\/brooksbooks\/gurgaselected.html\"><EM><FONT color=\"black\" size=\"1\">Fresh Scent<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The <EM>good news<\/EM> is that Democratic Leaders will almost surely do as True Majority <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">asks &#8212;&nbsp;&#8220;stand up, pound their podiums and loudly denounce the Bush Administr-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">ation&#8217;s planning for bombing Iran.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/podiumS.gif\" alt=\"podiumS\" \/><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The <EM>bad news<\/EM> is that they&#8217;ll probably do the right thing for the wrong reasons.&nbsp; They&#8221;ll<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">come out for using diplomacy rather than bombs against Iran <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">because voters are sick <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of war and its many&nbsp;costs,&nbsp;and because the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">President is <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">unpopular and far weaker.&nbsp; I&#8217;d<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">still prefer good policy and morality&nbsp;for their own sake &#8212; political integrity&nbsp;over political <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">expediency.&nbsp; Nonetheless, right now, playing <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">politics <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">should help prevent bombing Iran <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(with its <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">unimaginably bad unintended consequences).&nbsp;&nbsp; With politics in a democracy, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">you&#8217;ve gotta be thankful for good policy, even when the motives are less than pure.<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>&nbsp; Come on, <EM>True Majority<\/EM>: don&#8217;t let the Democratic Leadership off the hook.<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">Don&#8217;t make excuses for them, like the parent of&nbsp;some irresponsible adolescent.&nbsp; <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">Why not just tell them: &#8220;Last time, you knew what was the right thing, but de-<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">cided to go for votes instead. However, unless it can be shown that Elyse Pearson <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">knew what her husband was doing with those girls, it is difficult to agree that she <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">should be held civilly liable for not preventing his crimes.&nbsp; (And, the&nbsp;cost of disputing <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">health insurance coverage limitations seems a bit far afield, when looking at proper <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">damages in the suit.)&nbsp;&nbsp;
