The week, in Mexico and across the <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">United <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">States, I wonder who&#8217;s asking &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;c2coff=1&amp;rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2005-07%2CGGLD%3Aen&amp;q=%22when+is+cinco+de+mayo%3F%22&amp;btnG=Search\"><em>When is Cinco de Mayo?<\/em><\/a>&#8216;<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">[Last year, <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/05\/04#a3786\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">celebrated<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> on May fourth.]<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>  Why do so many news broadcasters &#8212; from <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/newshour_index.html\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">PBS<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8216;s Jim Lehrer <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">to <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/WNT\/?WNT=true\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">ABC<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><font size=\"2\">&#8216;s Elizabeth Vargas &#8212; end their show by saying &#8220;<em>we&#8217;ll see <\/em><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><font size=\"2\"><em>you<\/em> here tomorrow&#8221;?  Yes, the <\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordsmyth.net\/live\/home.php?script=search&amp;matchid=37274&amp;returnFields=PRO%2CDEF%2CSIC%2CDER%2CCRF%2CINF%2CEXA%2CSYC%2CSYN%2CSIM%2CSYL%2CPHR#POS1\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">transitive verb &#8220;see&#8221;<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> does have <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/33\/S0213300.html\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">many<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">meanings, but not one of them is &#8220;be watched by you.&#8221;  Giving <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">the broadcasters the benefit of the doubt, I suppose they might <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">mean &#8220;we&#8217;ll perceive or visualize you being in our audience.&#8221;  But, <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">that&#8217;s stretching it.<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"> <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/microphoneG.gif\" alt=\"microphoneG\" \/><\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>&#8211; Prof. Yabut Language Rule of Thumb<\/em>:  If you are in the <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">business of communicating with words, try really hard <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">not to take a common word and use it in a way that is <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the exact opposite of its most common meaning. <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8211; The <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> Gang swears never to use the phrase &#8220;we&#8217;ll <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">see you here tomorrow.&#8221;   We might say: &#8220;<em>Come back <\/em><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>and let our StatCounter perceive your presence<\/em>.&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8211; rather than the &#8220;now.&#8221;  and <\/font><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">explains that the <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">broadcasters are trying to maintain &#8220;the pretense of a face-<\/font><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">to-face encounter.<em>&#8220;<\/em>     <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.icsi.berkeley.edu\/~kay\/cv.2005.htm\"><font color=\"black\">Prof. Kay<\/font><\/a> (who is an expert in the fascinating field of color naming) concludes: <\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">&#8220;It seems like a pretty harmless fiction: <\/font><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">&#8220;I&#8217;m right there in your living <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">room, so I&#8217;m entitled to refer to your living room as &#8216;here&#8217;.&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">Your Humble Editor must be overplaying the <em>humilty <\/em><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><em>pretense<\/em> around here.   <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">I sure hope that readers, including the <em>Language Log<\/em> professors, didn&#8217;t <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">come away from my original question above thinking that I wasn&#8217;t aware of <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">the pretense and manipulation that were the purpose behind the &#8220;harmless <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">fiction&#8221; of saying &#8220;see you here tomorrow.&#8221;  My concern is with the resultant <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">deterioration in what I believe should be the primary purpose of non-fictional <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">and non-literary language<\/font><font face=\"Arial\">: the <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">accurate representation of reality.  (Perhaps, <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">my legal <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">and consumer-advocacy background <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">makes me particularly sensitive <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">to man<\/font><font face=\"Arial\">ipulation of words aimed at the public.  Haiku&#8217;s dedication to what is <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">actually <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">being perceived by our senses surely increases that sensitivity.)  Enter-<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">tainers, <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">such as Mark&#8217;s example <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">of Hank <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">Williams, are <em>expected <\/em>to use pretense <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">in <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">creating their product and enticing return customers.  Are journalists?<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">                                                                                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/microphoneN.gif\" alt=\"microphoneN\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Arial\">\u00a0 Why would we <em>want <\/em>to make excuses <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">for people who pride themselves on <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">being <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">real journalists and presenting <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">facts,  when they are twisting<\/font><font face=\"Arial\"> the customary meaning <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">of words, merely to get the viewer to have <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">warm fuzzies and return the next night? <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">It is not as if there are no <em>easy, accurate<\/em> alternative phrases that would also create<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">a feeling <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">of intimacy or immediacy.   Even if there weren&#8217;t, <em>this<\/em> member of the news- <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">broadcast <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">audience just wants the facts &#8212; <em>and<\/em> wants words (especially those that <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">are used frequently) to have reliable meanings.   <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">As we stated at the top of this blurb:  <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">None of the dictionary meanings of the phrase <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">&#8220;see you&#8221; is <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">&#8220;to <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">be seen by you.&#8221;  <\/font><font face=\"Arial\">At <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\">least, not yet.  <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/questionDudeSN.gif\" alt=\"questionDudeSN\" \/>  After all <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$2828\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">our preaching<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, why oh why, would anyone name <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">their weblog <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/spaces.msn.com\/theblogsblog\/Blog\/\"><em><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The Blogs Blog<\/font><\/em><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, and compound the error with the tagline &#8211; <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Blogging the <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Blogs of the web&#8221; ?  Talk about needing to go hug a toilet <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">bowl.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>  Despite that quibble, we want to thank the editor at <a href=\"http:\/\/spaces.msn.com\/theblogsblog\/Blog\/\"><em><font color=\"black\">TheBB<\/font><\/em><\/a> <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spaces.msn.com\/theblogsblog\/blog\/cns!E7B66C18BFF9E07B!348.entry\">for pointing<\/a> to this humble weblog yesterday. How about a female law professor-weblogger?<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;questionDudeS&#8221;   How much clout does <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blawgreview.com\/\">Blawg Review<\/a><\/em> have in the world of legal <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">weblogs?    So many people link to each new edition of Blawg Review, that it <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">appears <em>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blawgrepublic.com\/cat\/Legal-Ethics\/3\/\">Blawg Republic<\/a><\/em> had to reverse its policy of ignoring <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> links, <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"-0\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">as of the day we hosted <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/04\/10#a6437\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Blawg Review #52<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">. <\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Here are the facts:<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">As explained on May, 24, 2005, in &#8220;<\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/05\/24#a3867\" rel=\"nofollow\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">free speech in the <em>Blawg Republic<\/em><\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">,&#8221;  <\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">BR had stopped listing new <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> posts on Feb. 11, 2005, the day after <\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">I left a Comment at Bob <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legaline.com\/2005\/02\/blawg-republic-one-nation-under-rss.html#110848682243076266\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\">Ambrogi&#8217;s<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\"> website questioning the usefulness <\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of their service.  Then, shortly after I wrote the &#8220;free speech&#8221; piece, <em>all<\/em> <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of the links to<em> f\/k\/a<\/em> postings were removed from the <\/font><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\"><em>Blawg Republic<\/em> <\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">Legal <\/font><\/font><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\">Ethics page, and only the actual name of the weblog <\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">and <\/font><font size=\"2\">its tagline <\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">remained.  <\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">However, I hosted <em>Blawg Review<\/em> #52 on April 10, 2006, and <\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">dozens of weblogs <\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">pointed to #52 and <em>f\/k\/a<\/em>.  The next day, the <em>Blawg <\/em><\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\"><em>Review<\/em> editor wrote me to <\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">say he noticed that the <em>Blawg Republic<\/em> <\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\"><font size=\"2\">started <\/font><\/font><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blawgrepublic.com\/cat\/Legal-Ethics\/3\/\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">picking up my posts<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> again on <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">April 11, 2006.  <\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">[Yes, it is very hard to write <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">about <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blawgreview.com\/\"><font color=\"black\">BR<\/font><\/a><\/em><font color=\"black\"> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blawgrepublic.com\/\"><font color=\"black\">BR<\/font><\/a><\/em><\/font><font color=\"black\"> and<\/font> not get the <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">names mixed up.  In this post, I have <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">only used the initials &#8220;BR&#8221; <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to refer to <em>Blawg Republic<\/em> &#8212; I think.]<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I hope mature heads at <em>BR<\/em> <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">decided a little constructive criticism is a <\/font><br \/>\n<font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">fairly <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">stupid reason to ostracize a <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">weblog.  We&#8217;ll see.
