{"id":5280,"date":"2006-04-23T20:44:14","date_gmt":"2006-04-24T00:44:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2006\/04\/23\/that-blankety-blank-new-word-"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:59","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:59","slug":"that-blankety-blank-new-word-blang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/04\/23\/that-blankety-blank-new-word-blang\/","title":{"rendered":"that blankety-blank new word &#8220;blang&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a6529'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">We campaigned long and hard against the&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$2828\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">ugly-little&nbsp;word &#8220;blog<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">,&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">invoking our duty to a joint <EM>language legacy<\/EM>.&nbsp; Earlier this year, we <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">crusaded adamantly to make the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$5803\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">word &#8220;blawg&#8221; obsolete<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">.&nbsp; Today, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the <EM>f\/k\/a<\/EM> Gang proclaims its&nbsp;dissent over&nbsp;another spawn of &#8220;blog&#8221; &#8211; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">the neologism <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\">&#8220;<EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/04\/23\/jobs\/23wcol.html?ex=1303444800&amp;en=3964aed5697d5984&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\">blang<\/A>.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/EM>See <EM>New York Times<\/EM>, &#8220;<A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/04\/23\/jobs\/23wcol.html?ex=1303444800&amp;en=3964aed5697d5984&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\">Coming to Terms <\/A><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/04\/23\/jobs\/23wcol.html?ex=1303444800&amp;en=3964aed5697d5984&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\">with a Wired Age<\/A>, Part 2,&#8221; by Lisa Belkin, April 23, 2006, in which <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8212; perhaps trying to be a bit too hip and youthful &#8212; the Old Gray <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\">Lady becomes an <\/FONT><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">accessory to languicide<\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/trashmansmall.gif\" alt=\"trashman small\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Lisa Belkin&#8217;s column builds on <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/04\/09\/jobs\/09wcol.html?ex=1302235200&amp;en=3e843403497846da&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">one<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> published on April 9th. &nbsp;The <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">focus is an important and interesting topic: the ability of language to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;make something official&#8221; &#8212; to &#8220;make a phenomenon fully exist.&#8221; As <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">we discuss below, Part I, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">focused on words that describe&nbsp;the down-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">side of&nbsp;being overly-wired into modern technology.&nbsp; (Just yesterday,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Your Editor discussed the topic in a&nbsp;confessional <A href=\"a little less obsession would be nice\">post on over-posting<\/A>.)<\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Un<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">fortunately, Belkins ended the April 9th post with a request for more <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">technology-focused neologisms.&nbsp; The result was this paragraph in <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">today&#8217;s column:&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;You have names for many other new concepts, too. The <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">longest <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">list comes from Eve Fox (I can fit only part of it here), <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a vice presi-<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">dent for electronic campaigns at M&amp;R Strategic Services in Wash-<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">ington, who suggests a whole new language.
