{"id":5178,"date":"2004-12-07T13:46:16","date_gmt":"2004-12-07T17:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2004\/12\/07\/nonymously-yours\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:58:09","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:58:09","slug":"nonymously-yours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/12\/07\/nonymously-yours\/","title":{"rendered":"nonymously yours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a2874'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Two of the most enjoyable weblogs around are&nbsp;the &#8220;famous&#8221;&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/anonymouslawyer.blogspot.com\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Anonymous Lawyer<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> and&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/thesaurus.gif\" alt=\"thesaurus\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the new <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/anonlawprof.blogspot.com\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Anonymous Law Professor<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">.&nbsp; What I can&#8217;t understand, though, is why such<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">creative people can&#8217;t use more interesting synonyms for the overused &#8220;anonymous.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Wouldn&#8217;t names like <EM>Professor Incognito<\/EM> or the&nbsp;<EM>Unsub Lawyer<\/EM> be more fun and helpful?&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">If necessary, try the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Merriam-Webster <FONT color=\"black\">online <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/cgi-bin\/thesaurus?book=Thesaurus&amp;va=anonymous\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">thesaurus<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><FONT color=\"black\"> for starters<\/FONT>, if you&#8217;re contemplating <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">starting a weblog <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">with identity undisclosed.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anonymous\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Wikipedia&#8217;s notes<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> on anonymity are interesting, including: &#8220;Disguising one&#8217;s identity <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">may also be by choice, for legitimate reasons such as privacy and, in some <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">occasions, personal safety. Criminals usually prefer to stay anonymous, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">such as when writing a letter with a threat or demand.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/LI><\/UL><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">On the other hand, I wish my friends the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$2131\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">At-Least-a-Third<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> bar association would <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>stop<\/EM> thumbing through thesauri trying to figure out euphemisms for what they do.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">No matter what the Notable <A href=\"http:\/\/www.legalunderground.com\/2004\/02\/cynic_incubator.html\"><FONT color=\"black\">Lawyer Schaeffer<\/FONT><\/A> might think, &#8220;consumer lawyers&#8221; was <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">not apt, and&nbsp; <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/id\/2110699\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Mickey Kaus<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;and <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.overlawyered.com\/archives\/001779.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Walter Olson<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> are&nbsp;correct: <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;<EM>public protection lawyers<\/EM>&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">won&#8217;t pass the giggle test.&nbsp; Why not plain-old &#8220;<EM>plaintiff&#8217;s tort lawyers<\/EM>&#8220;?&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><FONT size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV>Dec. 10: <A href=\"http:\/\/commonscold.typepad.com\/commonscold\/2004\/12\/under_covers_.html\"><FONT size=\"2\">Common Scold<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">, citing an <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.abanet.org\/journal\/redesign\/home.html\"><EM><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">ABA Journal<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> article on anonymous weblogs by associates, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">asks what her readers think about the subject.&nbsp; Let her know.
