Lanoue<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">This Harvard Law School graduate (HLS &#8217;76) would like to join <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.legalaffairs.org\/howappealing\/2004_11_01_appellateblog_archive.html#110187045436591827\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Howard Bashman&#8217;s reminder<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> to my<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>alma mater<\/EM> that free speech often comes at a cost &#8212; as does sticking to one&#8217;s principles.&nbsp; Howard<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">responds&nbsp;<FONT color=\"black\">to <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/hosted.ap.org\/dynamic\/stories\/M\/MILITARY_RECRUITERS_HARVARD?SITE=SCCOL&amp;SECTION=HOME&amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">news<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\"> that HLS plans to start barring military recruiters, in the wake of&nbsp;&nbsp;the 3rd Circuit&#8217;s<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><A href=\"http:\/\/www.ca3.uscourts.gov\/opinarch\/034433p.pdf\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">decision<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><FONT color=\"black\"> yesterday<\/FONT> overturning the Solomon Amendment.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Rather than losing federal funding, Harvard Law School has been allowing military recruiters on campus,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">despite the anti-gay policies of the military.&nbsp; As Howard points out, in words worth quoting in full:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/dontforgettack.gif\" alt=\"don't forget tack\" \/> <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Harvard Law School at all times (including now) has had the right to ban<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">military recruiters <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">from campus notwithstanding the existence of the Solomon Amendment <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8212; the university <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">simply had to pay the price in loss of federal funding.&nbsp;&nbsp; Dean <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/news\/2004\/11\/30_solomon.php\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Kagan&#8217;s statement<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">suggests <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">that now that the price to be paid will soon be zero dollars, Harvard Law School can <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">afford <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">to exercise its right of association in the manner it prefers.
