{"id":5145,"date":"2004-11-24T18:20:52","date_gmt":"2004-11-24T22:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2004\/11\/24\/religious-law-schools-offer-n"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:58:12","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:58:12","slug":"religious-law-schools-offer-no-salvation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/11\/24\/religious-law-schools-offer-no-salvation\/","title":{"rendered":"religious law schools offer no salvation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a2788'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Thanks to an article in the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/11\/22\/national\/22law.html?oref=login&amp;pagewanted=all&amp;position=\"><EM><FONT color=\"black\">New York Times<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A> earlier this week, many Americans are now<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">aware of and talking about the existence of faith-based law schools.&nbsp; Naturally, members<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of the weblog community (like Professors<FONT color=\"black\"> <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/althouse.blogspot.com\/2004_11_01_althouse_archive.html#110113861366842508\"><FONT color=\"black\">Althouse<\/FONT><\/A><FONT color=\"black\"> and <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.professorbainbridge.com\/2004\/11\/religious_law_s.html\"><FONT color=\"black\">Bainbridge<\/FONT><\/A><FONT color=\"black\">,<\/FONT> and many <A href=\"http:\/\/volokh.com\/archives\/archive_2004_11_21.shtml#1101222374\"><FONT color=\"black\">others<\/FONT><\/A>) have<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">also been discussing the topic.&nbsp; As is usually the case, the Editor of this weblog is skeptical<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">about any proffered panacea for complex problems &#8212; especially, when the legal profession <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">will have a big part in the outcome.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/podiumsfneg.gif\" alt=\"podium sf neg\" \/>&nbsp; Will faith-based law schools be the salvation of the American legal profession, justice<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">system, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">government or society?&nbsp; &#8220;Not by a long shot&#8221; is my best guess.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV align=\"center\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>&#8212; click <\/EM><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$2800\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>here<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM> to read this entire post, which concludes:&nbsp; <\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Catholics and evangelical Christians can be great lawyers, legislators and citizens.&nbsp; But legal education will not be <FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">improv<\/FONT>ed through religious indoctrination or blinders.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">one by one<BR>don&#8217;t the pennies drop?<BR>winter prayers<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">harvest moon-gazing<BR>priests, samurai<BR>merchants<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><A href=\"http:\/\/webusers.xula.edu\/dlanoue\/issa\/index.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"#ff0000\" size=\"1\"><STRONG>Issa,<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"1\"> translated by David G.
