<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">It&#8217;s really not difficult to <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">click on&nbsp;a thesaurus (<EM>e.g.<\/EM>, <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.m-w.com\/thesaurus.htm\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Merriam-Webster<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/62\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Roget II<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, <\/FONT>or <A href=\"http:\/\/www.cogsci.princeton.edu\/~wn\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>WorldNet<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">.),&nbsp;but the American news media&nbsp;seems allergic to synonyms in this presidential campaign.&nbsp; And, we&#8217;ve been condemned to cliche hell.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Until recently, I couldn&#8217;t figure out why the two political parties were spending&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">so much money to woo the 806 people living in <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/69\/62\/B03062.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Battle Ground, Indiana<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> (Tippecanoe County), or&nbsp; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">even the 3700 folks in <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/search?q=battle%20ground\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Battle Ground, Washington<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">.&nbsp; And, believe me, Ken Burns and I might have <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">picked Louisiana, Missouri or Illinois&nbsp;as &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swing_state\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#42aac8\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>swing states<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">,&#8221; but I could never have come up with all <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">19 states so-designated by the Bush and Kerry Campaigns for <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">this election cycle.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">According to <A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swing_state\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Wikipedia<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, the <EM>Washington Post<\/EM> has defined swing states as those that were decided by less than three<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;percentage points in the 2000 presidential election.<\/FONT><br \/>\n<LI><A href=\"http:\/\/encarta.msn.com\/encnet\/features\/dictionary\/DictionaryResults.aspx?refid=1861717556\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Encarta<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> informs&nbsp;us that a <EM>swing voter<\/EM> is called a&nbsp;<SPAN><A href=\"http:\/\/encarta.msn.com\/dictionary_1861694597\/floating_voter.html\"><FONT color=\"#000000\"><EM><STRONG>floating voter<\/STRONG><\/EM><\/FONT><\/A><\/SPAN> in the U.K.&nbsp; That&#8217;s a nice alternative phrase, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">but it reminds me of hanging chads and the whole Election 2000 debacle.<\/FONT><\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<DIV><A href=\"http:\/\/www.professorbainbridge.com\/2004\/10\/running_the_wor.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Prof. Bainbridge<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;and the <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/17\/magazine\/17BUSH.html?ex=1255665600&amp;en=890a96189e162076&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland\"><FONT color=\"#000000\"><STRONG>New York Times<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><\/EM> (and even my sister), have told me that religion and faith play a<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">very important role in this Presidential Election.&nbsp; Nevertheless, I have to assert my own constitutional rights<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">(the pursuit of happiness, <EM>not <\/EM>hackneyedness) and insist that <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/94\/S0969400.html\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>synonyms<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> are not <\/FONT><\/EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/94\/S0969400.html\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>sinful<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>,<\/EM> wicked nor even un-<EM>right<\/EM>-eous.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><IMG height=\"53\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/devilg.gif\" width=\"40\" border=\"0\">&nbsp;&nbsp; Syn-o-nyms are not sin-words &#8212; very different etymologies (see <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/94\/S0969400.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>here<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> and <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/14\/S0421400.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>there<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">).&nbsp; Indeed, I&#8217;d say right<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">now that synonyms are <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/52\/H0115200.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>heavenly<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, sublime, delightful &#8212; almost as enhanting as post-election <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/36\/S0403600.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>silence<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> will become by mid-November<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Find some alternatives to &#8220;battle ground state&#8221; and &#8220;swing state&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">during the next two weeks.&nbsp; Even if you don&#8217;t like &#8220;floating,&#8221; how about variations of:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">oscillate, sway, rock, vibrate, &nbsp;fluctuate, <FONT size=\"2\">undulate<\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">, <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">waver<\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">, tilt, quiver, pulsate, <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT size=\"2\">to-and-fro<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">skirmish, firefight, strategic, hard-fought, closely-contested, targeted<\/FONT><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">important, significant, crucial, vital, decisive<\/FONT><\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
