Troy City <A href=\"http:\/\/www.troyrecord.com\/site\/news.cfm?newsid=13146738&amp;BRD=1170&amp;PAG=461&amp;dept_id=7021&amp;rfi=6\"><EM>Judge Henry Bauer<\/EM> was evicted<\/A> from his judicial office last wwek, in a 4-3 decision by<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">New York&#8217;s&nbsp;Court of Appeals.&nbsp;[<A href=\"http:\/\/www.nycourts.gov\/ctapps\/decisions\/oct04\/125pc04.pdf\"><FONT color=\"black\">Matter of Bauer<\/FONT><\/A>, No. 125, Oct. 14, 2004]&nbsp;John Caher wrote an excellent <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.com\/jsp\/article.jsp?id=1097686258276\"><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">article in <\/FONT><\/A><EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.com\/jsp\/article.jsp?id=1097686258276\"><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">NYLJ<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/EM><FONT size=\"2\">explaining this many-<\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">faceted decision, which focused on the setting of excessive bail, and failure to inform defendants of their <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">right to counsel, &nbsp;in order to force then to enter plea bargains&nbsp;[e.g., holding the accused in jail in lieu of $25,00 <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">bail for a crime that would produce a $100 fine <FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">and no jail time].&nbsp;<\/FONT>&nbsp;I&#8217;ve been following the story for the past few <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">years, since Troy is part of my metropolitan area and the hearings were public.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">Judge Bauer attacked the discipline process as a conspiracy, egged on by the ACLU, against conservative-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\">minded judges.&nbsp;&nbsp;[continue reading <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$2519\"><FONT color=\"black\">Judge Bauer evicted<\/FONT><\/A>]&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/FONT><\/LI><\/UL><\/UL><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<P><FONT size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; cannot be &#8220;preserved in the longrun in a society that has lost its grounding in faith.&#8221;&nbsp; I trust&nbsp;people who are moral&nbsp;because they respect all humans and recognize their interdependence; and, I believe those people&nbsp;will strive to do the right thing in their personal&nbsp;and political lives.&nbsp; Frankly, I&#8217;m not so certain about those whose morality stems primarily from fear of eternal damnation.&nbsp; Many people of faith, I am happy to say, fall in the first category, along with many &#8220;non-believers&#8221;.&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT color=\"black\" size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.cuivienen.org\/blog\/archives\/000410.html\">Carey Cuprisin<\/A>&nbsp;has some useful thoughts and questions, from a libertarian perspective, on the role of moral values and belief systems in the political proces.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/LI><\/UL><\/UL><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><FONT size=\"2\">If I were&nbsp;one to mix&nbsp;prayers and politics, there&#8217;s <EM>one more eviction<\/EM> that would be on my prayer card.&nbsp;&nbsp;
