Following up on last month’s column in Washington Lawyer<\/span><\/a><\/em>, urging that law firm <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
partners do <\/span>pro bono<\/span><\/span><\/a> work, D.C. Bar President John C. Keeney, Jr.,\u00a0asserts that the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
profession needs “Mentoring for Professional Balance.”\u00a0 He <\/span>notes in the October <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2004 edition <\/span>(available soon <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>) that many of us went to law school to “make a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
difference on important public <\/span>matters.”\u00a0 Nonetheless:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>lawyers continually put off doing <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
pro bono and public service throughout <\/em>their careers<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

— “the same bad career advice is repeated by the same people to new partners” — to keep <\/span>your nose to the grindstone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

— \u00a0“Mentoring thus becomes the one-size-fits-all advice<\/em> to ‘do what I did’ rather than carefully crafted advice to pursue <\/span>particular dreams <\/span>and goals — and thus make time for your family, too.”<\/span> <\/span>Terminology<\/em> has changed, with firms and agencies calling themselves “families<\/em>” in the 1970s, <\/span>a “team<\/em>” by the 1990s, <\/span>and now the very <\/span>impersonal “platform<\/em> for individual talents” in the new millennium. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I think that we can do better!\u00a0 Firms and agencies should enable, not merely encourage, volunteer. work.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Similarly, the NYS Bar established<\/span><\/a> a Special Committee on Balanced Lives in the Law this week “which will examine <\/span>how attorneys <\/span><\/span>in various work settings confront the ever-evolving dynamics of meeting professional, societal and personal demands.” (Press Release<\/span><\/a>, Oct. 6, 2004)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
