{"id":4978,"date":"2004-08-28T17:57:08","date_gmt":"2004-08-28T21:57:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2004\/08\/28\/get-a-good-translator\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:58:29","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:58:29","slug":"get-a-good-translator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/08\/28\/get-a-good-translator\/","title":{"rendered":"get a good translator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a2036'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/japanflag.gif\" alt=\"japan flag\" \/>&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><SPAN><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"1\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">The quality of a translation from one language to another is often very important.&nbsp; It&nbsp;can&nbsp;mean the difference between keeping an accused&nbsp;in jail&nbsp;and releasing him (see &#8220;US Judge Sets Bail<STRONG>&nbsp;<\/STRONG>for Terror Suspects After <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.turkishpress.com\/turkishpress\/news.asp?ID=25512\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">Translation Slip-Up<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">&#8221;&nbsp;&#8212; where a Kurdish word&nbsp;was belatedly found to mean&nbsp;&#8220;brother&#8221; not &#8220;commander&#8221;, as the indictment <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/article.cfm?objectID=20EC5D8C-0778-4C14-B7E5496BC62F283D\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">asserted<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">).&nbsp;&nbsp; It can also turn classic Japanese haiku into awkward or antiquated poetry &#8212; <EM>or<\/EM>, make it as alive and effective as any modern haiku.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">The anthology <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0486292746\/103-4316240-4898206?v=glance\"><EM><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><STRONG>The<\/STRONG> <B>Classic<\/B> <B>Tradition<\/B> <B>of<\/B> <B>Haiku<\/B>.<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"> (Ed., <STRONG>Faubion Bowers<\/STRONG>, Dover Press, 1996) has been a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">favorite of mine for years, because it&#8217;s priced at $2.00, and because it contains haiku from Japan&#8217;s greatest masters, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">translated by top-flight scholars in the field, with footnotes giving cultural and personal context to many offerings.&nbsp;&nbsp; A special feature is the inclusion of <EM>more than one translation <\/EM>for many of the poems.&nbsp; Grouping translations of the same poem together demonstrates how the attitude, era,&nbsp;and personality of the translator can greatly effect the final product and the reader&#8217;s experience.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/notequalblue.gif\" alt=\"not equal blue\" \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; Below, you&#8217;ll find several translations of two haiku by&nbsp;<SPAN><A href=\"http:\/\/webusers.xula.edu\/dlanoue\/issa\/index.html\"><STRONG><FONT color=\"#ff0000\">Kobayashi Issa<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/A>.<\/SPAN> (David G.
