So, it&#8217;s quite auspicious that the Third Annual <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.smilemania.com\/pages\/517558\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Great American Grump Out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> took place today.   You see, May 26th, 2004, is my <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/05\/26#a5\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">First Anniversary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> as a weblogger, and I&#8217;ve decided to ban grumpiness permanently from all future posting on this weblog [<em>Ed. note<\/em>: that ban and the plan set out in this posting did not last long, and we soon slipped back into opinionated punditry; see our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/about\/\">About page<\/a>].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/shiftKeyneg001.gif\" alt=\"shift key neg\" \/> More precisely, I will stop all forms of commentary and preaching at this weblog as of <em>this<\/em> posting &#8212; from now on, we&#8217;re grumping-out for good, and <strong>focusing exclusively on haiku<\/strong>, and related forms of poetry.  Given our history of frequent name-changes, you can just call this weblog <strong><em>f\/k\/a . . .<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Four things are clear here at my desk: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">I&#8217;m unable to maintain an opinionated, topical weblog without obsessing and<em> over<\/em>weblogging. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">my health is noticeably and chronically worse than it was pre-weblog (when it wasn&#8217;t <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/10\/11#a336\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">exactly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"> great)<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"> <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">nothing <em>ethicalEsq<\/em>, prof. yabut or any other <em>alter ego<\/em> is likely to achieve by trying to change lawyer behavior is worth further jeopardizing my health.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">on the other hand,<em> haiku is good<\/em> for my body and soul, and good for lawyers (and other hyper-busy, over-stressed Americans), <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/12\/07#a372\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">too<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/redchecksmall001.gif\" alt=\"check red\" \/> The very-public soap opera of my many weblog hiatuses, retirements, and reformulations needs to end.  As my wise physician, Joe Hayes, has often said,<em> <\/em>&#8220;David, you&#8217;re like an alcoholic who thinks he can go into a bar and have <strong>Just One drink<\/strong>.&#8221;   Cold turkey appears to be my only safe relationship to punditry.  <em>Please<\/em> don&#8217;t try to lure me back with flattery or new coping strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">With 220,000 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/berkman\/topsites?sort=alltime\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">page hits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> in 52 weeks, I&#8217;m immensely <strong>grateful to my weblogging friends<\/strong> &#8212; colleagues, visitors, frrequent commentors, <em>et al<\/em>.  Thanks to all the webloggers who have pointed to us so frequently, and said some pretty darn nice stuff about <em>ethicalEsq<\/em>.  [No more eulogies, the ones last November were enough for a lifetime (or two).] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">I&#8217;m finally going to have time to visit other weblogs consistently, and to enjoy small pleasures away from my laptop, which have been sorely neglected this past year.  Soon, I&#8217;ll have more energy, too.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/bikesketchgray.gif\" alt=\"bike sketch gray\" \/> You are all invited to stop by <em>frequently<\/em> for a haiku moment.  I&#8217;ll be spotlighting the works of top-notch English-language haiku poets, presenting special materials [such as the serialized preview of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$388\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #42aac8;font-size: x-small\"><strong>Jim Kacian&#8217;s How-to Primer<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">, with new installments the first of each month], updating our <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$367\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Haiku Resources Page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">, with its links to haiku sources, and humbly offering &#8212; and always re-editing &#8212; my own small poems.  This is not goodbye.
