{"id":4836,"date":"2004-05-18T18:28:29","date_gmt":"2004-05-18T22:28:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2004\/05\/18\/another-silly-one-day-gas-boy"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:58:45","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:58:45","slug":"another-silly-one-day-gas-boycott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/05\/18\/another-silly-one-day-gas-boycott\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Silly One-Day Gas Boycott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1503'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">About an hour ago, I received a much-forwarded email from a very good friend of mine.&nbsp; It irked me.&nbsp; Here&#8217;s my <STRONG>Reply email<\/STRONG> to her, which I hope is self-explanatory (and persuasive):<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><B>Subject:<\/B> DON&#8217;T BUY GAS ON MAY 19TH<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\"><BR><FONT size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Dear [Old Friend],<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I hate to sound like a grump, but I <EM>must<\/EM> ask you not to send me <EM>any<\/EM> email message that asks to be forwarded &#8220;to everyone you know,&#8221; or any similar kind of chain letter.&nbsp;&nbsp; There are lots of reasons, but the most important to me are <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(1) they are a spammer&#8217;s or pervert&#8217;s dream &#8212; the email address of every single person in the entire chain becomes available to everyone who receives the email message.&nbsp; I bet you care about that for yourself, and I definitely do for me.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(2) almost every single one of these chain letters is either false, futile or f-ing-stupid.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I just&nbsp;checked out&nbsp;the May 19th Gas&nbsp;Out email message at&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/urbanlegends.about.com\/\"><STRONG><FONT color=\"skyblue\">Urban Legends.com<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/A> <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">and pasted their&nbsp;information below.&nbsp; (It contains their usual, useful analysis.) &nbsp;If you plan to send this material to someone else, please don&#8217;t just hit Forward; instead, paste it into a new message, so that my email address and name aren&#8217;t distributed further.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Thanks for your patience with me. Email and internet hygiene (along with&nbsp;common sense)&nbsp;are important!<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">s\/David<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/stopsign.jpg\" alt=\"stop sign\" \/> <STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/urbanlegends.about.com\/library\/bl_no_gas_may_19th.htm\"><FONT color=\"red\">Don&#8217;t Buy Gas on May 19th<\/FONT><\/A><\/STRONG>&nbsp;&nbsp; [from <A href=\"http:\/\/urbanlegends.about.com\/library\/bl_no_gas_may_19th.htm\"><FONT color=\"skyblue\">UrbanLegends.About.com<\/FONT><\/A>]<BR>&nbsp;<BR><STRONG>Yet another variant of the &#8216;Gas Out&#8217; chain letter<\/STRONG>, this one urging consumers to boycott gas stations on May 19th to &#8216;send a message&#8217; to the oil companies&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Description:&nbsp; Email chain letter<BR>Circulating since:&nbsp; May 2004<BR><STRONG>Status<\/STRONG>:&nbsp;<STRONG> Ill conceived<\/STRONG><BR>Analysis:&nbsp; See below&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><STRONG>Comments:<\/STRONG>&nbsp; With U.S. gasoline prices at a 13-year high, it&#8217;s understandable that consumers are fed up and hankering for relief, but it&#8217;s fair to ask whether mass-forwarding yet another &#8220;boycott gas&#8221; chain letter will achieve the desired result. Based on past experience, the answer is: not likely. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">There are <STRONG>two glaring flaws in the approach<\/STRONG>: <\/FONT><br \/>\n<OL><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">A successful boycott <STRONG>requires a sustained, organized effort<\/STRONG> by a large number of participants; randomly circulating a chain letter amounts to no organization at all. And we know from <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/urbanlegends.about.com\/gi\/dynamic\/offsite.htm?site=http:\/\/www.ucan.org\/News\/UnionTrib\/3%2D12%2D03\/SignOnSanDiego%5Fcom%2520%2520News%2520%2520Business%2520%2D%2D%2520E%2Dmail%2520urges%2520boycott%2520of%2520fuel%2520from%2520Exxon%2520Mobil.htm\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"skyblue\" size=\"2\">past attempts<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> that no matter how many people jump on the bandwagon, actual participation in email-driven boycotts is spotty and ultimately negligible. <\/FONT><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>It&#8217;s illogical<\/STRONG>. Refusing to buy gasoline on one particular day of the month won&#8217;t affect the oil companies&#8217; overall sales or profits. Why not? Because everyone who skips buying gasoline on May 19 will be filling their tanks on the 20th. <STRONG>An effective boycott would require <I>consuming<\/I> less fuel, not just buying it on one day instead of another.<\/STRONG> <\/FONT><\/LI><\/OL><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The claim that a one-day boycott would result in an industry loss of over $4.6 billion is a pure fabrication, by the way.
