{"id":4804,"date":"2004-04-28T09:59:42","date_gmt":"2004-04-28T13:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2004\/04\/28\/reforming-murphys-laws\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:58:50","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:58:50","slug":"reforming-murphys-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/04\/28\/reforming-murphys-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"Reforming Murphy&#8217;s Laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1366'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/shipcartoonneg.gif\" alt=\"ship cartoon neg\" \/>&nbsp; What if you launched a new weblog, but no one <EM>could<\/EM> come?&nbsp; A few minutes after we <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/#a1363\">posted<\/A> two nights ago on the birth of <STRONG><EM>prof. yabut&#8217;s journal<\/EM><\/STRONG>, our weblog server went down and stayed supine for well over a day. [Clearly, a clicked server does not boil any sooner.]&nbsp;&nbsp; However, as&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/www.overlawyered.com\/\">Mr. Olson<\/A>&nbsp;has taught us, we probably shouldn&#8217;t complain&nbsp;&#8212; much less sue &#8212; over&nbsp;the disruption of&nbsp;a free service.&nbsp;&nbsp; We shall, instead, bemoan the&nbsp;inevitability of <A href=\"http:\/\/www.murphys-laws.com\/\">Murphy&#8217;s Law<\/A>.<STRONG><EM>&nbsp;<\/EM><\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">On the other hand, lawyers are&nbsp;<EM>expected<\/EM> to be&nbsp;skeptics, nay-sayers and <A href=\"http:\/\/www.unwords.com\/unword\/yabut.html\">yabuts<\/A>, so we thought we&#8217;d inaugurate this new weblog with a counter-intuitive&nbsp;attempt at <STRONG>optimism<\/STRONG>.&nbsp; After pulling teeth, the best we could muster were the following <EM>reform <STRONG>amendments<\/STRONG><\/EM><STRONG> to <\/STRONG><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Murphy&#8217;s Law<\/STRONG><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, from Bob Brezsny&#8217;s <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/portal\/Astrology.html\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Free Will Astrology<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> column (week of April 22, 2004)<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;If anything can go wrong, it will, but in correcting it you will stumble upon a lucky break you wouldn&#8217;t have encountered otherwise.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Everything takes longer than you think, which is a good thing, because if it took only as long as you thought, you wouldn&#8217;t be doing it right.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;You will often find something in the last place you look, but along the way you&#8217;ll discover a valuable item you didn&#8217;t realize was missing.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I&#8217;m not too sure we could get this Bill through Congress (where&#8217;s the pork?), nor stay this sanguine very long here at <EM>pyj<\/EM>.&nbsp; We shall see.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Despite the source of the above Amendments, please be assured that Prof. Yabut (a) has never said &#8220;what&#8217;s your sign?&#8221; to a<EM>ny<\/EM>one.
