{"id":4782,"date":"2004-04-09T13:00:44","date_gmt":"2004-04-09T17:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2004\/04\/09\/grinding-up-young-lawyers\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:58:54","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:58:54","slug":"grinding-up-young-lawyers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/04\/09\/grinding-up-young-lawyers\/","title":{"rendered":"Grinding Up Young Lawyers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1186'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">I was so <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/04\/08#a1185\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">distracted<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> yesterday evening, that I didn&#8217;t notice an <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.denniskennedy.com\/archives\/cat_legal_profession.html#000316\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">excellent post by Dennis Kennedy<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> about lawyer associates, which mentioned&nbsp;my <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/04\/07#a1166\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">discussion<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> of the&nbsp;junior lawyer reprimanded for his misleading&nbsp;silence.&nbsp;(&#8220;Proposed Study: Associate Departures from Connectivut Law Firms,&#8221; 04-08-04).&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/mouselawyerhoriz.jpg\" alt=\"mouse lawyer horiz\" \/>&nbsp;. .&nbsp;&nbsp;Dennis says &#8220;It&#8217;s not the rule that&#8217;s unfair to associates, it&#8217;s the fact that it adds another worry for associates who are currently living in <STRONG>a system where they walk on eggshells<\/STRONG>&#8221; and &#8220;I&#8217;ve said many times that the current methods big law firms use with associates are grinding up some of the brightest and most capable young lawyers I&#8217;ve seen.
