{"id":4716,"date":"2004-02-12T12:20:41","date_gmt":"2004-02-12T16:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2004\/02\/12\/there-is-no-do-not-e-mail-reg"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:59:02","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:59:02","slug":"there-is-no-do-not-e-mail-registry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/02\/12\/there-is-no-do-not-e-mail-registry\/","title":{"rendered":"There Is No &#8220;Do Not E-mail Registry&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a764'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The Federal Trade Commission is alerting consumers&nbsp;that <A href=\"http:\/\/www.unsub.us\/\">The National Do Not Email Registry<\/A>&nbsp;is a sham and a scam, as there is no such Registry.&nbsp; According to a <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/opa\/2004\/02\/spamcam.htm \">press release<\/A>&nbsp;posted this morning:<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The FTC is concerned that the &#x201C;unsub.us&#x201D;site could be part of a high-tech scam that uses a deceptive Web site to trick consumers into disclosing their e-mail address or other sensitive personal information. This site may be a ruse to collect valid e-mail addresses to sell to spammers. The result could be even more spam for consumers who sign up for this &#x201C;registry.&#x201D; Or it may be even worse &#x2013; some scammers have collected information through bogus web sites like this one that mimic those of legitimate organizations, and then used the information to commit identity theft.<\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">At the Registry website, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.unsub.us\/info\/\">the &#8220;sponsors&#8221; say<\/A>: &#8220;The National Do Not Email Registry is managed by National Email Registry, LLC, an Independent Consumer Protection Organization based in New York, NY.&nbsp; The Registry was created to provide Consumers and Direct Marketers the tools required to help significantly reduce the volume of unwanted bulk messages &#8221;&nbsp; Just this week, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.typepad.com\/t\/trackback\/437505\">Evan Schaeffer<\/A> started a discussion about &#8216;cynic incubators&#8221; &#8212; words (such as reform and consumer) that are adopted or misused to confuse the unway.<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The FTC is advising consumers not to submit their e-mail addresses or any other personal information to any site claiming to be a &#x201C;National Do Not E-mail Registry.&#x201D; <\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/dontforget.jpg\" alt=\"don't forget\" \/> The agency&#x2019;s Bureau of Consumer Protection says <STRONG>the best way to avoid scams like this one is to keep your personal information to yourself &#x2013; including your e-mail address &#x2013; unless you know who you&#x2019;re dealing with. <\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Should you get an e-mail claiming to represent a &#x201C;Do Not E-mail Registry,&#x201D; an organization to stop spam, or even the FTC itself, report it to the FTC at <\/FONT><A class=\"bodyTextLinks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">www.ftc.gov<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> or 1-877-FTC-HELP. If you believe you have already been scammed, file your complaint at <\/FONT><A class=\"bodyTextLinks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">www.ftc.gov<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, then click on <\/FONT><A class=\"bodyTextLinks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/idtheft\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">www.ftc.gov\/idtheft<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> to learn how to minimize your risk of damage from identity theft. <\/FONT><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The press release notes that the FTC is &#8220;studying the feasibility of creating a National Do Not Spam Registry, and will issue a report in June 2004.
