<A href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/\">President Bush<\/A> <A href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2004\/02\/20040202-14.html\">proclaimed<\/A> it on Monday, with the reminder that &#8220;This year&#8217;s theme, &#8216;Financial Literacy: Earning a Lifetime of Dividends,&#8217; highlights the importance of financial education to consumer protection.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The FTC has an informative <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/opa\/2004\/01\/ncpw.htm\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">press release<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, too, with links to financial resources for consumers.&nbsp; (Thanks to <A href=\"http:\/\/jurist.law.pitt.edu\/paperchase\/2004_02_01_indexarch.htm#10758248161740923\">Jurist Paperchase<\/A> for the reminder to celebrate and educate.)<\/FONT><\/P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<P><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">My decade at the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/\">Federal Trade Commission<\/A>&nbsp;might make me a bit biased, but I think the Commission has the right approach to consumer protection:<\/FONT><\/P><br \/>\n<OL><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">help consumers be fully informed&nbsp;when making their decisions and&nbsp;asserting their rights<\/FONT><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">promote competition in price, quality, innovation, etc.<\/FONT><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">have a strong enforcement presence<\/FONT><\/LI><\/OL><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">You can find a directory of FTC consumer information <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/ftc\/consumer.htm\">here<\/A>.&nbsp; The FTC website has a lot of good information about <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/menu-credit.htm\">credit<\/A>, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/menu-invest.htm\">investments<\/A>, e-commerce and <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/bcp\/menu-internet.htm\">internet<\/A>&nbsp;issues.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Go to <A href=\"http:\/\/www.consumer.gov\/\">Consumer.gov<\/A> for a gateway to consumer information from the federal and state governemnts.&nbsp; While clicking around today, I discovered a webpage with links to federal I<A href=\"http:\/\/www.pueblo.gsa.gov\/multilanguage\/multilang.htm\">nformation in Other Languages<\/A> &#8212; <EM>25<\/EM> languages!&nbsp; It&#8217;s interesting to see what&#8217;s available in various languages &#8212; the materials vary greatly.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/dontforget.jpg\" alt=\"don't forget\" \/>&nbsp; Finally, <STRONG><EM><FONT color=\"red\">to my lawyer colleagues<\/FONT><\/EM><\/STRONG>:&nbsp; Please don&#8217;t forget that <STRONG>clients are consumers, too.&nbsp; They deserve<\/STRONG>:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to be fully informed of options and rights; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/LI><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">all the benefits of vigorous competition; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/LI><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the protection of vigilant and effective regulatory watchdogs<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/LI><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">special treatment <EM>every<\/EM> week.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<P align=\"center\"><STRONG><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">e&amp;h-e&amp;h-e&amp;h<\/FONT><\/EM><\/STRONG><\/P><br \/>\n<P align=\"center\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Speaking of consumer fraud, <STRONG><EM>thanks <\/EM><\/STRONG>to<EM> <A href=\"http:\/\/declarationsandexclusions.typepad.com\/foolblog\/2004\/02\/even_better_tha.html\">The Fool in the Forest<\/A><\/EM> for mentioning my essay on <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$523\">Haiku &amp;
