{"id":4619,"date":"2003-12-07T10:59:15","date_gmt":"2003-12-07T14:59:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2003\/12\/07\/aba-journal-takes-note-of-uk-"},"modified":"2011-08-05T15:00:36","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T19:00:36","slug":"aba-journal-takes-note-of-uk-bar-reforms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/12\/07\/aba-journal-takes-note-of-uk-bar-reforms\/","title":{"rendered":"ABA Journal Takes Note of UK Bar Reforms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a368'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">This morning, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.elawyerblog.org\/archives\/000408.html\">elawyerBlog<\/A>&#8216;s<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> Jerry Lawson highlights an article in the current <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.abanet.org\/journal\/redesign\/12nuk.html\">ABA Journal<\/A><\/EM> on&nbsp;the &#8220;revolution&#8221;&nbsp;that is turning the world upside down in the legal profession&nbsp;of the United Kingdom.&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(<EM>Revolution Overseas: The British Legal Profession Faces Regulatory Upheaval<\/EM>, by Terry Carter, ABA Journal, Dec. 2003).&nbsp;<\/FONT> Jerry focuses on the likely changes in providing legal services in Britain, where supermarkets, banks and insurance companies are expected to enter the field, and high-tech delivery systems will help fuel the changes.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">We covered the UK reforms in postings made in <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/07\/24#a141\">July<\/A>,<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/08\/04#a168\">August<\/A> (comparing several differences between the UK and US),<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;and <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/09\/30#a305\">September<\/A>, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">emphasizing changes in the UK discipline system and access issues for legal consumers.&nbsp; We have also reported on reforms afoot in <A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/08\/29#a233\">Australia<\/A>.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">In July we lamented:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A legal reformer could get envious seeing that there&#8217;s a nation where these issues are taken seriously by the Government <I>and<\/I> the regulatory scheme can be addessed on a nationwide basis, rather than fiefdom by fiefdom.&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">And, in August <EM>ethical<\/EM>Esq?
