{"id":4610,"date":"2003-10-08T00:53:07","date_gmt":"2003-10-08T04:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2003\/10\/08\/aba-unbundling-handbook-looks"},"modified":"2011-08-05T15:00:37","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T19:00:37","slug":"aba-unbundling-handbook-looks-like-a-winner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/10\/08\/aba-unbundling-handbook-looks-like-a-winner\/","title":{"rendered":"ABA Unbundling Handbook Looks Like a Winner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a327'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P>The Modest Means Task Force of the ABA&#8217;s Section of Litigation has just released its <A href=\"http:\/\/www.abanet.org\/litigation\/taskforces\/modest\/report.pdf\">Handbook on Limited Scope Legal Assistance<\/A>.&nbsp;&nbsp; The 155-page document appears to live up to its billing as a &#8220;soup-to-nuts&#8221; guide for the practitioner.&nbsp; There&#8217;s too much for me to review or digest quickly, but the Forward by Committee Chair Scott J. Atlas gives a taste of the purpose, scope and utility of the document:<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV>The Handbook is a practical guide to providing legal services in a way that permits clients, who otherwise could not afford or would not choose to hire a lawyer, to obtain critical legal representation for discrete and important tasks in the course of resolving disputes.&nbsp; The Handbook discusses all aspects of limited-scope representation, including the formation and termination of the relationship, the performance of discrete tasks, and the ethical issues and procedural rules involved in this service method.&nbsp; It also provides valuable anecdotal experiences of limited-services practitioners.&nbsp; An extensive Appendix contains sample forms, pleadings,&nbsp; and proposed court rules.&nbsp; It is a &#8220;soup-to-nuts&#8221; guide for the practitioner. The Section is proud to provide this Handbook to lawyers, judges, court administrators, and bar associations.&nbsp; It will be an invaluable tool to bench and bar in our efforts to build a better justice system.<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV>In addition to the pdf version linked above,&nbsp;a text version is available <A href=\"http:\/\/www.abanet.org\/scripts\/search\/doc_read.jsp?preformat=true&amp;URL=%2Flitigation%2Ftaskforces%2Fmodest%2Freport.pdf&amp;docKey=..%2F..%2F..%2Fweb%2Flitigation%2Ftaskforces%2Fmodest%2Freport.pdf%40abanet&amp;querytext=unbundling\">here<\/A>.<\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI>In other unbundling news, as noted by <A href=\"http:\/\/myshingle.com\/article.pl?sid=03\/10\/01\/2331216&amp;mode=thread\">Carolyn Elefant<\/A> last week, the New York Bar Association appears to be readying its recommendations for ethical rule changes and statutes&nbsp;that would permit unbundling to flourish in the State.&nbsp; According to the <EM>New York Law Journal<\/EM> <A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.com\/jsp\/article.jsp?id=1063212109529\">article<\/A>, &#8220;N.Y.
