style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Partners make it worse by insisting on higher and higher PPP (profits per <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">for the pathology, in action.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0However, a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">s Prof. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/09\/27#a296\">Patrick Schiltz<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/12\/14#a382\">Steven Keeva<\/a>, <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">and the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/10\/24\/take-back-your-time-day-its-for-lawyers-too\/\">f\/k\/a Gang<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/03\/19\/even-nyt-scapegoats-the-billable-hour\/\"><span style=\"color: black\">repeatedly<\/span><\/a>) have pointed out, the greed of young <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">lawyers <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">feeds into the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">process, making it virtually impossible to cure on a systemic <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">basis. <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">All is not lost. <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">As we <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/09\/27#a296\">said<\/a> in 2003:<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/checkedBoxSN.gif\" alt=\"checkedBoxSN\" \/><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> In many ways, our profession is in such a sorry state because\u00a0law <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">schools\u00a0and firms\u00a0have adopted and perpetuated [perpetrated?] lowest-<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">common-denominator values (mostly driven by greed and made worse <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">by pretension), and because\u00a0<em>individual<\/em> attorneys\u00a0have\u00a0gladly or blindly <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">embraced those values.\u00a0\u00a0 Too many lawyers have then decided to live <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">with, and made excuses for, the intolerable consequences.\u00a0\u00a0 That&#8217;s the <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">bad news.\u00a0 The good news is that individuals <em>can choose better values<\/em> <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">in order to give better career advice, change institutions, or\u00a0make\u00a0cor-<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">rections in their lives. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">We each can, with courage and &#8220;sacrifice&#8221;, take charge of <span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">our own life <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">and <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">happiness.\u00a0 Wanting less money and needing less prestige <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">will go a long way <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">toward nurturing healthy and happy attitudes.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><em><strong><span style=\"color: red\">p.s.<\/span><\/strong><\/em> The UK <em>Happiness Index<\/em> had a finding that might surprise a lot <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">of lawyers (and their significant others): They came in 6th, out of 28 <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">careers for their Work\/Life Balance rating.\u00a0 Bankers came in last place. <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">That should remind us that finding a satisfactory balance is not a unique <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">curse for our profession. We made a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/10\/24#a5161\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">related point<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> last October, in con-<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">nection with Take Back Your Time Day: <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/sesawj.gif\" alt=\"seesaw\" \/><\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> Of course, lawyers love to see themselves as <em>especially<\/em> <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">overworked, over-stressed, and beset by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nysba.org\/Template.cfm?Section=Press_Release1&amp;template=\/PressRelease\/PressReleaseDisplay.cfm&amp;PressReleaseID=321&amp;PressReleaseCategoryID=2&amp;ShowArchives=0\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;color: black;font-size: x-small\">life balance issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> &#8212; <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">and far too many are.\u00a0 I just want to point out that a very large <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">percentage of adults (and children) in our nation feels the same <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">pressures. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">Not to\u00a0(unduly) belabor the obvious, that balance could be shifted in the <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">right direction<em> if<\/em> our income goals (and quotas) were reduced.<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div dir=\"ltr\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">visiting the dog\u2019s grave <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">then away! <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">grasshopper<\/span><span style=\"font-family: TrebuchetMS\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: TrebuchetMS\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: TrebuchetMS\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: TrebuchetMS\"><br
