The purpose of public speech is not just <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to restate anger but to clarify the principles and evidence <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">that fuel it &#8212; in ways that invite discussion, not inhibit it. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The demons are already among us &#8212; so let&#8217;s muster up <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">some new analogies and declare a ceasefire on such <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">[antiquated] demonizing rhetoric . . . &#8220;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Sadly, though,&nbsp;I must&nbsp;report <FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">that&nbsp;Katrina has raised <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">my expectations, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">only to dash them.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/FONT>In the second half of its awkward title,&nbsp;her <EM>WaPo<\/EM> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">op\/ed <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">column today <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">seems to promise <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;<EM>New Names to Call,<\/EM>&#8221; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in place <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of the&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">historically <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">outdated epithets.&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;<\/FONT>&nbsp;&nbsp;All we <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">get from her are quotes <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">from <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">politicians&nbsp;(and actors) calling their adver<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">saries by the old slurs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">There is <EM>not even one<\/EM> suggested, modern <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">substitute.&nbsp; As weblogger <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT size=\"+0\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Jacques Hawtrey <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/carryonamerica.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/katrina-we-dont-need-to-re-locate-for.html\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">points out<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, we don&#8217;t even get a reference to a re-<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">cent, infamous eponymous&nbsp;Hurricane from Katrina. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>&nbsp; Sorry, K, this workproduct doesn&#8217;t&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8220;C-GradeG&#8221;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">merit so much as a C grade.&nbsp; I&#8217;d be happy to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">make a few suggestions, but that would be <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">condescending &#8212; especially to a woman who <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">has an entire magazine staff to help her research <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">and brainstorm.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Maybe a <EM>WaPo<\/EM> editor mistakenly cut out the bottom half <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of the op\/ed piece.&nbsp; Maybe Katrina was too busy&nbsp;preparing &nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">for&nbsp;Sunday morning talk shows.&nbsp; I&#8217;ve got a &#8220;soft-spot&#8221; for <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">ya, Young Lady.&nbsp; So, you get another week to finish this project. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Please no Electra or Delilah tricks.&nbsp; You might still get a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">B+, if you live up to your potential.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><EM>on the face<\/EM><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><EM>that last night called me names<\/EM><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><EM>morning sunbeam<\/EM><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN>&nbsp;&nbsp; Another admission:&nbsp; Mother Nature has let me down,&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">too, recently.&nbsp; &nbsp;I&#8217;m among those described today the <EM>NYT<\/EM> op\/ed <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">piece, <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/03\/26\/opinion\/26sun3.html?ex=1301029200&amp;en=f0a6ed65e04a1e00&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">A Momentary Pause<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, by Verlyn Klinkenborg (March 26,&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\">2006):&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">&#8220;I have to keep reminding myself that it is only late March. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">I have been so eager for spring that it feels as though time <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">has almost stopped. One reason may be that it was warm <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">a few weeks ago and then the cold returned, putting the <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">season on ice. But there is something else going on as well. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">Scientists say that spring comes earlier than it used to. The <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">snow cover dwindles sooner and bud break comes earlier. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">And yet our awareness of that makes it feel as though spring <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">comes even earlier than it is already coming. Global warming <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">accelerates faster in our heads than it does in fact. March is <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">not quite the new April yet.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">You&#8217;ll find the same over-anticipation of &#8220;Spring-like weather&#8221; at <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the joint haiku weblog&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/ukkuhaiku.blogspot.com\/\"><EM>UKKU Spring Haiku<\/EM><\/A>, and at my own <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>dagosan&#8217;s <\/EM><A href=\"http:\/\/dagosanshaikudiary.blogspot.com\/\"><EM>haiku diary<\/EM><\/A>.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">late March &#8212;<BR>not a lamb<BR>in sight<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\">&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/dagosanshaikudiary.blogspot.com\/2006\/03\/ii-083.html\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"1\">dagosan<\/FONT><\/A><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Of course, we all know that the spring <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">equinox scarcely ever brings <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">consistently mild weather.&nbsp; But, even <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">those of us who really dislike <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">summer&#8217;s heat, seem to yearn for <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">early Spring.&nbsp; Although few of us <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">will be mending any fences, we <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">might all try to&nbsp;follow Klinkenborg&#8217;s <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">advice:&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;In the country it&#8217;s easy to find yourself leaning forward <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">all through the year, always waiting on the next season, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">getting through your life as though you were walking into <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a stiff wind. This is one of those days when I catch myself <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in that posture &#x2014; pitched forward into the gale of time. So <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I&#8217;ll try to slow down and straighten up.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;THNLogoG&#8221; I meant to mention the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">op\/ed <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">piece today by <EM>Washington Post<\/EM> ombusman Deborah Howell, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/03\/24\/AR2006032401327_pf.html\"><EM>The Post and the Whole Picture in Iraq<\/EM><\/A>.&nbsp; It is an interesting <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">perspective on how hard it is to please the military, civilians <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">or reporters, with press coverage of Iraq by the <EM>Post<\/EM>.&nbsp;
