{"id":4455,"date":"2006-03-26T20:42:25","date_gmt":"2006-03-27T00:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2006\/03\/26\/actin-naturally-buck-owens-is"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:54:03","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:54:03","slug":"actin-naturally-buck-owens-is-still-picking-and-smiling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/03\/26\/actin-naturally-buck-owens-is-still-picking-and-smiling\/","title":{"rendered":"actin&#8217; naturally:  buck owens is still picking and smiling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a6359'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I was a <A href=\"http:\/\/www.buckowens.com\/ \">Buck Owens<\/A> fan long before I knew it.&nbsp;&nbsp; In my sheltered, urban, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Northeast childhood, &#8220;<EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.lyricsdepot.com\/the-beatles\/act-naturally.html\">Act Naturally<\/A><\/EM>&#8221; was a Beatles song, released in&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">1965, when I was fifteen&nbsp;&#8212; the flip <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">side to the most covered song in record <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">history, &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yesterday_(song)#The_release\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><EM>Yesterday<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8221; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8212; and the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">anthem, sung along with Ringo Starr,&nbsp;for my <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">youthful (and not-so-youthful) romantic <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">failures.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Image:Beatles-singles-yesterday.jpg\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"1\">record cover<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/ActNaturallyLabel.jpg\" alt=\"ActNaturallyLabel\" \/> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.lyricsdepot.com\/the-beatles\/act-naturally.html\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Act Naturally<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\"> (J. Morrison)<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>They&#8217;re gonna put me in the movies<BR>they&#8217;re gonna make a big star out of me<BR>We&#8217;ll make a film about a man that&#8217;s sad and lonely<BR>and all I gotta do is act naturally<\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/BLOCKQUOTE><FONT size=\"+0\"><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The biggest star in country music in the 1960s made not the slightest <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">dent on my psyche.&nbsp; Not when he achieved 15 #1 hits in a row, nor <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">when <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">he adopted&nbsp;the red, white and blue <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">guitar, that became his trademark at the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">end of that decade, to show <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">his patriotism, while I concentrated on <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Viet Nam <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">War protestation.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\">&#8220;bucLegend&#8221;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"1\">&nbsp;&#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.buckowens.com\/aboutbuck.html\"><FONT color=\"black\" size=\"1\">catch a legend<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"1\">&#8220;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">It took me a&nbsp;few decades to realize that Buck Owens had his first #1 <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">country <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00000G6RH\/qid=1143411078\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/102-9892500-1392132?s=music&amp;v=glance&amp;n=5174\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">hit<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;with &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.buckowens.com\/audio\/act_naturally.rm\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Act Naturally<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8221;&nbsp;in 1963 (click&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/www.buckowens.com\/audio\/act_naturally_ringo.rm\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">here<\/FONT><\/A> to hear&nbsp;Buck&nbsp;and Ringo <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">sing the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">tune <EM>together<\/EM><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">). &nbsp; My ignorance was due in part to city-folk bias <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">against country music, which also kept me from becoming a fan of the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.heehaw.com\/\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Hee-Haw<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">tv show, where <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.heehaw.com\/\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Buck<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"> was a co-host from 1969 to 1986.&nbsp; even after <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I became a big country music fan in the late &#8217;70s (thanks to a few friends <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">who played in country-rock bands).&nbsp; Buck went into a vol<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">untary retirement, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">just&nbsp;when I would have most appreciated&nbsp;his brand <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of guitar-driven, pared-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">down, strong beat, &#8220;American music&#8221;.&nbsp; in 1988, with country star <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(and <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">actor) Dwight Yokam (on&nbsp;the <EM>Buenas Noches<\/EM> ..&#8221; <A href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000002LEY\/qid=1143412536\/sr=11-1\/ref=sr_11_1\/102-9892500-1392132?n=5174\">album<\/A>), that I finally <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">focused on this remarkable man and <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">musician, who seemed to enjoy himself <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">so much, even when singing about <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">mean streets and broken hearts &#8212; and <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">even&nbsp;though he had to buck the sappy trend in Nashville country music, to create <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">his own &#8220;Bakersfield sound&#8221; in blue-collar California.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; again,<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">on the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.stlyrics.com\/lyrics\/rememberthetitans\/actnaturally.htm\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">soundtrack<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> of Denzel Washington&#8217;s&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.stlyrics.com\/lyrics\/rememberthetitans\/actnaturally.htm\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Remember the Titans<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;(2000).&nbsp; It <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">is sadly ironic that it&nbsp;took&nbsp;his death yesterday, to get millions of us to <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">cue up <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">one of Buck&#8217;s albums and enjoy his music today.&nbsp; Buck Owens deserves to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">be remembered far beyond the Country Music community.&nbsp; He is surely <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">still doing what comes most naturally to him &#8212; plucking that patriotic guitar, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">tapping his foot, and smiling.&nbsp; My foot is tapping, too.&nbsp; Seventy-six years is <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">not enough for us, Buck, but thank you for taking us along your journey.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/BuckOwens.gif\" alt=\"BucOwensMug\" \/>&nbsp;
