{"id":4406,"date":"2006-02-28T01:42:15","date_gmt":"2006-02-28T05:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2006\/02\/28\/too-much-to-read-too-much-to-"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:54:07","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:54:07","slug":"too-much-to-read-too-much-to-write","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/02\/28\/too-much-to-read-too-much-to-write\/","title":{"rendered":"too much to read, too much to write"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a6103'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN><SPAN><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I may have to stop reading <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.blawgreview.com\/\">Blawg Review<\/A><\/EM> every week. <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">No, it&#8217;s not <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">because of its <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$5803\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">cutesy<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> title.&nbsp; It&#8217;s far more <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">practical: The darn &#8220;carnival&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of law-related weblogs <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">keeps adding to my to-do list of things to read <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8212; and <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">then, naturally, of things to write &#8212; at a pace that can <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">never be <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">accomplished.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/computerweary.jpg\" alt=\"computer weary\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">For example, Sean Sirrine hosted <A href=\"http:\/\/www.blogdenovo.org\/archives\/001233.html\"><EM>Blawg Review<\/EM> #46<\/A> <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">at <EM>DeNovo<\/EM> this <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">week, and there are simply too many <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">recent postings that sound inter-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">esting and\/or enter<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">taining, not to mention the must-reads.&nbsp;&nbsp;(Go, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.blogdenovo.org\/archives\/001233.html\">see<\/A> for&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">yourself.) &nbsp;I used to <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">hope that <EM>Blawg Review<\/EM> would <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">introduce me to one <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">brand new weblog each week.&nbsp; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Now, to be honest, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I hope it tempts me <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to read no more <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">than one or two <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">postings each week.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">This week, I&#8217;m going to check out Bruce MacEwen&#8217;s look at&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">BigLaw in 2015, at <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bmacewen.com\/blog\/archives\/2006\/02\/its_2015_do_you.html\">Adam Smith Esq<\/A><\/EM>. and follow the pointers <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">at David Jacobson&#8217;s <A href=\"http:\/\/www.djacobson.com\/other_interests\/2006\/02\/martin_seligman.html\"><EM>Other Interests<\/EM> weblog<\/A>, regarding the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">lack of optimism among lawyers. (By the way, David surely <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">doesn&#8217;t have to worry about low-esteem &#8212; check out his <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT size=\"+0\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.djacobson.com\/about.html#About%20me\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">About page<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> and &#8220;signature strengths.&#8221;) <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/carCoupeG.gif\" alt=\"carCoupeG\" \/> However, I wish I hadn&#8217;t clicked on the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.vehicleinfo.com\/AutoMuse\/archives\/2006\/02\/were_all_for_co.html\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">AutoMuse<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">link <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">at <EM>BR <\/EM>#46.&nbsp; To save myself aggravation, I am going to refrain <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">from explaining antitrust law, competition policy, monopoly&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">power, conspiracy theory and consumer choice and welfare,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to&nbsp;E.L. Eversman<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, who seems <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">to be a little confused in a post on<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.vehicleinfo.com\/AutoMuse\/archives\/2006\/02\/were_all_for_co.html\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">insurers and lower prices<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\">.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Maybe the guys at <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.antitrustreview.com\/\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Antitrust Review<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">weblog can&nbsp;educate old E.L.<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> &#8212; including&nbsp;pointing out&nbsp;why the issues <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">raised are not really <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">caused by the McCarran-Ferguson Act&#8217;s antitrust <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">exemption <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">for the business of insurance.&nbsp; This former antitrust lawyer <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(who&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">spent a lot of time trying to&nbsp;get rid of that exemption)&nbsp;just <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">hasn&#8217;t <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">got the time or <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the energy. <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM><\/EM><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM><STRONG>Link Love?<\/STRONG>&nbsp; No thanks.<\/EM>&nbsp; Before leaving the topic of Blawg Review, I want to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">respond to Sean Sirrine&#8217;s plea that we all start &#8220;giving out permanent links&#8221; to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">eachother again.&nbsp; Sean wants us to put more weblogs on Blog Rolls,&nbsp;when we see <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">post <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">that is <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">well done.&nbsp; He likens the process to tipping for good service.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Sorry, it&#8217;s not for me.&nbsp; Perhaps it was because&nbsp;Blog Rolls&nbsp;seemed so gimmicky <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">when <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I started weblogging (meant to create a&nbsp;clubby feel and to&nbsp;goose search engine <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">placement), but I have never had one and don&#8217;t plan to start.&nbsp; As the number of law <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">weblogs multiplied, it became impractical to keep a list of every weblog that seemed <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">worth a look.&nbsp; And, once a list is started, pruning out the deadwood becomes rather <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">touchy, and distinguishing between their quality and scope is impossible.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/laptopinbed.jpg\" alt=\"laptop in bed\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Sean worries about law-oriented weblogs becoming static and &#8220;talking about the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">same things,&#8221; but I still see lots of topics and choices &#8212; while wanting the best <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">weblogs to keep doing what they do best.&nbsp; Perhaps, this gets back to my opening <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">theme at the top of this post: Who has time for reading ever-more weblogs?&nbsp; When <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">do law students study?&nbsp; When do lawyers practice law?&nbsp; When do they have lives <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">away from their computers?&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">There are many ways for those in search of new weblogs to find them.&nbsp; Browsing <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">long and un-annotated blog rolls &#8212; created by bloggers who are promiscuous with&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">their Link Love &#8212;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> seems like one of the&nbsp;least efficient&nbsp;ways to do so<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">.&nbsp;&nbsp; Taking a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">look at the weekly <EM>Blawg Review<\/EM> is a pretty good place to start &#8212; but don&#8217;t feel <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">you have to &#8220;Read them all,&#8221; like Sean says.&nbsp;&nbsp; You don&#8217;t have to catch every <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">fish in the sea.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&#8220;MGStuff&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;Brevity is one of the best things about haiku.&nbsp;
