weblog apolitical.&nbsp; However, he is <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">willing to head out on the choppy seas of political punditry in <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">pursuit of a bad pun.&nbsp; Thus, a few days ago he opined on the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Dubai Ports World controversy, in order to use the headline:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/declarationsandexclusions.typepad.com\/foolblog\/2006\/02\/scubaidubai_tod.html\">Scubai-Dubai To-do<\/A> (Feb. 22, 2006).&nbsp; Having stuck his neck <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">out that far, George decided to rally on the side of freedom <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of speech regarding publishing the Danish cartoons of the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Prophet.&nbsp; George says: <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/HideGoTree.gif\" alt=\"HideGoTree\" \/>&nbsp; &#8220;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\">I am inclined to be an absolutist when it <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">comes to <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">matters of free speech and free expression, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">let it gore <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">whose ox it may.&nbsp; On that score, I quote <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">approvingly <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">this weekend commentary from <\/FONT><A title=\"ColbyCosh.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.colbycosh.com\/#disu\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Colby Cosh<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;What I want to know is, how come our other <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">constitutional freedoms are never hogtied and <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">thrown onto the psychoanalyst&#8217;s couch like this?&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">. . . <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;But let anyone exercise freedom of the press, or <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">freedom of speech, and suddenly his motives are i<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">nterrogated &#8212; suddenly the &#8216;right&#8217; is only available <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to the well-meaning, which is to be defined none <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">too broadly.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I left a lengthy <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/declarationsandexclusions.typepad.com\/foolblog\/2006\/02\/scubaidubai_tod.html#comments\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Comment disagreeing<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> with George (and Colby), <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">George replied thoughtfully, and&nbsp;I responded (not persuaded <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT size=\"+0\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">by George&#8217;s quoting from <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/02\/22\/AR2006022202010.html?sub=AR\" rel=\"nofollow\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">William Bennett and Alan Dershowitz<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in the <EM>Washington Post<\/EM>). <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/watchstepsign.gif\" alt=\"watch step sign\" \/><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Now that we&#8217;ve had a little more time for reflection and the <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(totally unjustified) violent riots have died down, it would be <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">great if others joined the discussion.&nbsp; It seems to me that no rea-<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">son<\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">able person <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in the Western World is questioning the<EM> right<\/EM> <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of Flemming Rose, editor of the Danish Jyllands-Posten, to <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">publish those cartoons.&nbsp; We have been questioning the wisdom <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 0.8em\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">or appropriateness of the decision to publish.&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/SPAN><FONT size=\"+0\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> As I noted at <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Fool in the Forest, having the <EM>right<\/EM> is not the end of the decision- <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">process for responsible citizens, publishers, speakers:&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">When exercising the free speech right is likely to lead <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to violence or great offense to others, I would hope that <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">there would at least be a balancing of interests &#8212; what <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">is the benefit from exercising the right, and what are the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">probable ill effects? Saying the benefit is proving the ex-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">istence of the right is not particularly useful.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/newspaperS.gif\" alt=\"newspaperS\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Since the cartoons say nothing that could not have been <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">said (much better) with words, and they would predictably <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">offend even moderate Muslims (who would not dream of <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">reacting with violence), their original publication makes little <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">sense to me. Re-publishing makes even less sense. No <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">matter how shocking or tame, republishing in the USA adds <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">little to the discussion &#8212; Muslims will still be offended; all but <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">extremists will condemn the violent reactions; and, more people <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">are very likely to be victims of violence at the hands of extremists.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"+0\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">What do you think?<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"+0\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>&nbsp; Although I think Colby Cash has greatly exaggerated the<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">threat to free speech (especially since that right exists <EM>vis-a-<\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>vis<\/EM> the government, not as protection from the opinion of private <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">persons), I heartily agree with him that the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.united-church.ca\/news\/2006\/0217.shtm\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">United Church of <\/FONT><\/A><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.united-church.ca\/news\/2006\/0217.shtm\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Canada<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">was completely off-base concluding &#8212; with nothing <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">but speculation to support their claim &#8212; that the only <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">reason <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the cartoons <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">were published is &#8220;simply racial hatred.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\">empty bottle<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\">a few words<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\">I would like to take back<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><SPAN>&nbsp;&nbsp; Interesting.&nbsp; (Back around 1980, one of my best friends remarked <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">that I looked like whichever ethnic group you most disliked that week. In&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"+0\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">1970,&nbsp;I was told I looked like &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0001725\/\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Omar Sharif<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> on acid.&#8221;&nbsp; Omar and I were both <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a lot younger then.<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">)&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I had a lot of fun with MyHeritage.&nbsp;&nbsp;Three female friends of mine were very <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">pleased to hear that they looked like Julia Roberts, Katherine Hepburn, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">and Isabella Rossellini.&nbsp;
