Haiku are plain-speaking <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">poems. Try to avoid using abstract or conceptual words. Also try to <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">avoid using simile, metaphor, rhyme, or language that is too ?poetic.? <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Use sensory images to convey experience. If you are writing a general <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">statement about life without any sights, sounds, smells, or tastes, <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">you are likely writing something other than a haiku.<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/blossomBranchF.gif\" alt=\"blossomBrachF\" \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/08\/checkedboxs.gif\" \/><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> A few haiku poets writing in English do follow the 5-7-5 pattern with <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">wonderful results, but the great majority of published haiku poets writing <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in English view the haiku as a poem in three lines of 17 or fewer syllables.<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">In a haiku, every word must count. If you can omit a word or phrase without <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">losing any key meaning or the natural flow of language, do so. <\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/08\/checkedboxs.gif\" \/><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Most haiku create the English equivalent of the <span>kireji<\/span>, which in Japanese <\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">haiku is a word that cuts the poem into two parts. In the West, poets use <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">punctuation marks (e.g., dashes, commas, or colons) or spacing (extra <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">spaces between words, or line breaks) to divide their poem.
