\"VCBFLogo\"\u00a0 The inaugural <\/font>Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival<\/font><\/a> has just announced the <\/font>
\nwinners and highly recommended poems in its <\/font>Haiku Invitational<\/font><\/a> 2006 <\/font>contest. <\/font><\/font>
\nVCBF invited “the ‘poet in everyone’ from British Columbia and around the world <\/font>
\nto submit up to two unpublished English-language haiku in honour of the cherry <\/font>
\ntree.” <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

I encourage you to wander through the collection of <\/font>
\nwinning<\/font><\/a> and <\/font>commended<\/font><\/a> poems<\/font>, where you will find <\/font>
\nmany new <\/font>ways to think about cherry blossoms (also, <\/font>
\nsee the interesting comments<\/font><\/a> by the judges). Pink <\/em><\/font>
\nAlert<\/em>: if your eyes are sensitive to excessive amounts <\/font>
\nof the color pink, you may want to put on your sunglasses<\/font>
\nbefore heading to the VCBF website.<\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Six of f\/k\/a’s Honored Guest Poets<\/font><\/a> had haiku that were selected by <\/font>the VCBF <\/font>
\njudges for special recognition. Three of the haijin had both of his <\/font>or her submitted <\/font>
\npoems selected: w.f. owen<\/a>, roberta beary<\/font><\/a>, and ed markowski<\/font><\/a>. <\/font>The haiku are pre-<\/font>
\nsented below, <\/font>for your enjoyment (and, if you’re still in a deep-freeze, for your <\/font>

has a <\/font>nice little introduction<\/font> and quick primer <\/font>on the basics of writing haiku<\/a>. <\/font> <\/font><\/p>\n

Four particularly helpful and important <\/font>points: <\/font><\/p>\n

\n

A haiku is a poem that captures a scene or experience in just a <\/font><\/p>\n

few words, suggesting the depth and intensity of the moment. <\/font><\/p>\n

Haiku use concrete images to capture this moment of intuition. <\/font><\/p>\n

Above all, haiku try to imply<\/span> the emotion of the poet?s experience <\/font><\/p>\n

without stating it.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

Haiku differ from other types of poems. Haiku are plain-speaking <\/font><\/p>\n

poems. Try to avoid using abstract or conceptual words. Also try to <\/font><\/p>\n

avoid using simile, metaphor, rhyme, or language that is too ?poetic.? <\/font><\/p>\n

Use sensory images to convey experience. If you are writing a general <\/font><\/p>\n

statement about life without any sights, sounds, smells, or tastes, <\/font><\/p>\n

you are likely writing something other than a haiku.<\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A few haiku poets writing in English do follow the 5-7-5 pattern with <\/font><\/p>\n

wonderful results, but the great majority of published haiku poets writing <\/font><\/p>\n

in English view the haiku as a poem in three lines of 17 or fewer syllables.<\/font><\/p>\n

In a haiku, every word must count. If you can omit a word or phrase without <\/font><\/p>\n

losing any key meaning or the natural flow of language, do so. <\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Most haiku create the English equivalent of the kireji<\/span>, which in Japanese <\/font><\/p>\n

\n

haiku is a word that cuts the poem into two parts. In the West, poets use <\/font><\/p>\n

punctuation marks (e.g., dashes, commas, or colons) or spacing (extra <\/font><\/p>\n

spaces between words, or line breaks) to divide their poem. The purpose <\/font><\/p>\n

of having two parts is to create tension and resolution, or an unstated rela-<\/font><\/p>\n

tionship between two images.<\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n
