When one of my best friends showed an interest in haiku <\/FONT><\/DIV>

two years ago, I tried to figure out how to best nurture that <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
interest.  Because she rarely gets online, I needed something <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
on paper, and the answer seemed clear: lend her my copy <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of The Haiku Anthology<\/EM><\/A><\/FONT>: Haiku and Senryu in English<\/EM>, 3rd Ed.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
(<\/FONT>W.W. Norton<\/FONT><\/A> Press, edited <\/FONT>by <\/FONT>Cor van den Heuvel<\/FONT><\/A>, 1999). <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
With 850 poems by 89 of the finest past and present English-<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
language haiku <\/FONT>poets, and introductory essays on the <\/FONT>evolution <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of the genre in English, THA<\/EM> was the perfect choice.  It’s pre-<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
decessor, the <\/FONT>2nd edition<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A>, was <\/FONT><\/FONT>my initial introduction to <\/FONT>the <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
genre and the poets.  <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n

I’ve missed having The Haiku Antholgy<\/EM> within arms’ reach, <\/FONT><\/DIV>

and have been wanting to ask for it back.  Thus, it was <\/FONT>a <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
pleasant surprise when friend Cyndi handed it to me as <\/FONT>I <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
was leaving her home last weekend, while she reassured me <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
that she now has a good supply of her own haiku volumes <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
by her bedside.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
It took only a few minutes to see why I had missed this <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
volume.  Opening to any page, landed me among old friends <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and their “offspring.”   For example, the first poems to come <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
to my attention by our <\/FONT>Honored Guest Tom Clausen are there,<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

retiree, I don’t have to do or witness this custom in person <\/FONT><\/DIV>

any more.  But, I see it occasionally online — such as at <\/FONT><\/DIV>

Crime & Federalism<\/EM> today<\/A>, when Mike Cernovich had a <\/FONT><\/DIV>

short post saying:<\/FONT><\/DIV>

Not knowing the facts, procedure, or law of the particular <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
case, the lawyer-Yabut and the citizen in me want to ask <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
things <\/FONT>like: (1) was justice really served?  (2) was it an <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
easy case <\/FONT>to win because the prosecutor did a terrible job? <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
(3) was <\/FONT>the victory “a great job” because it took a very slick <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
lawyer <\/FONT>to <\/FONT>create a reasonable doubt, when the facts suggested <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the <\/FONT>defendant had actually done the acts charged?  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

that I’m showing my doubts about the lawyer’s<\/FONT><\/DIV>

widows and children frequently, would I congratulate him or <\/FONT><\/DIV>

Is Mike just giving Norm a little free (search-engine-<\/FONT>friendly) <\/FONT><\/DIV>

publicity that Norm is too modest to post?   Does he know <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the particular case well and is truly pleased at the outcome <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
as a seeker of justice and fairness?  Or is every lawyer victory <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
worthy of congratulations from his friends and associates?<\/FONT><\/DIV>
