of our <\/FONT>beloved Schenectady, NY, or <\/FONT>Metroplex<\/FONT><\/A>, its economic development <\/FONT><\/DIV>

agency, it is only fair to give a standing ovation for a great success <\/FONT>story.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Supported by a $9.5 million Metroplex <\/FONT>grant<\/FONT><\/A>, and its own <\/FONT>fund drive, our <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
already grand <\/FONT>Proctor’s Theater<\/FONT><\/A> has expanded its stage <\/FONT><\/FONT>area, in order to <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
accommodate even the largest Broadway roadshows. <\/FONT>The boosters promised <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
to bring those shows to our small city (which is <\/FONT>part of the <\/FONT>NY Capital Region, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
along with Albany, Troy, and Saratoga <\/FONT><\/FONT>Springs), and to <\/FONT>put some life<\/FONT><\/A> <\/FONT><\/FONT>into our <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
mostly moribund downtown com-<\/FONT><\/FONT>mercial scene.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
To prove it, and despite the skeptics, Proctor’s lured the road production <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of <\/FONT>The Phantom of the Opera<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A> to Schenectady, for the longest run in the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
old vaudeville Theater’s history — the entire month of February.  A week <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
into the run, Proctor’s announced that all but one hundred of the 80,000 <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
available tickets have been sold (with all the remainders being single <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
seats).<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n

Perhaps more important, with a cast and crew of 150, plus the <\/FONT>thousands <\/FONT><\/DIV>

Proctor’s has always been able to bring business to downtown Schen-<\/FONT><\/DIV>

ectady only one night at a time.  If it becomes a destination of choice <\/FONT><\/DIV>

for major Broadway roadshows and their audiences, the foot-traffic that <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
has been so sorely missing, and the core of business needed to sustain <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
a lively downtown, may indeed be possible in the near future — in this <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
City that has lost so much of its jobs, population, stores, and hope over <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the <\/FONT>last few decades.  Thanks and best wishes to Proctor’s “Next Stage” <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
