{"id":4367,"date":"2006-02-08T16:45:27","date_gmt":"2006-02-08T20:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2006\/02\/08\/sought-haiku-sans-e\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:54:11","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:54:11","slug":"sought-haiku-sans-e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2006\/02\/08\/sought-haiku-sans-e\/","title":{"rendered":"sought: haiku-sans-e"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a5957'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Thanks to a <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/discuss\/msgReader$5944?mode=day\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">comment<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;at yesterday&#8217;s <A href=\"where did all those e's go?\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">bummr<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> posting, <\/FONT>from Pat M.,<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">just learned about <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/search-handle-url\/index=books&amp;field-author-exact=Georges Perec&amp;rank=-relevance,+availability,-daterank\/102-9892500-1392132\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Georges Perec<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8216;s 2005 novel <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.godine.com\/books\/titles\/1567922961.htm\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">A Void<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;(translated <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">from the French by Gilbert Adair):&nbsp; As the <EM>New Yorker<\/EM> explains:<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/NoE.gif\" alt=\"NoER\" \/>&nbsp; &#8220;Here is a true tour de force: a novel without <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">single letter E. The translator&#x2019;s dazzling re-creation <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of the French original conveys the author&#x2019;s near magical <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">cleverness while preserving an underlying seriousness <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">that makes this book much more than a curiosity.&#x201D; <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>A Void<\/EM>&#8216;s publisher says:<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>A Void<\/EM> is a metaphysical whodunit &#8230;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\">. It is also an out-<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\">rageous verbal stunt: a <EM>300-page novel<\/EM> that never once <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\">employs the letter E. Adair&#x2019;s translation, too, is astounding; <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>Time<\/EM> called it &#x201C;a daunting triumph of will pushing its way <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\">through imposing roadblocks to a magical country, an <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\">absurdist nirvana of humor, pathos, and loss.&#x201D;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Not only has Perec saved a lot of e&#8217;s for us to send to&nbsp;Robert Soble&#8217;s&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/NoEN.gif\" alt=\"NoEN\" \/><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/scobleizer.wordpress.com\/2006\/02\/05\/scoblr-hatr-thisr-trendr-grabbr-shoots-screens-to-flickr\/\"><FONT color=\"black\">Flickr trendoids<\/FONT><\/A>, he&nbsp;has also inspired me to attempt this game on <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a very <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">micrio scale &#8212; with my <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">own haiku.&nbsp; I quickly learned how <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">difficult&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">eschewing that vowel can be.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Looking <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">through the hundreds of haiku and senryu that <EM>dagosan<\/EM> <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">posted <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">at <EM>f\/k\/a<\/EM> last year, it became clear that not using e&#8217;s does <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">not come naturally &#8212; none of my poems was e-less (even though <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">they are almost always shorter than 17 syllables).&nbsp; Today, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">with a <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">little struggle, this&nbsp;paltry<\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> example arose from the depths of my <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">pysche:<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">our long <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">bathtub soak &#8212; <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">almost <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a full moon<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <EM><FONT size=\"1\">dagosan<\/FONT><\/EM><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">My Schenectady neighbor, Honored Guest Yu Chang has a <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">name that promises e-lessness.&nbsp; Nonetheless, out of approx-<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">imately 50 of his poems that have appeared here, only one <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">has no <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>e<\/EM>:<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">rough landing <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the warmth <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of your hand<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><br \/>\n<DIV><SPAN><SPAN><STRONG><FONT color=\"#ff0000\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\">&nbsp; <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3883\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#ff0000\" size=\"1\"><STRONG>Yu Chang<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\">&#8211; <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/STRONG><A href=\"http:\/\/homepage.mac.com\/gnach\/upds folder\/upds\/\"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"1\">Upstate Dim Sum<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"1\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"1\">(<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"1\">2004\/I<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/NoEG.gif\" alt=\"NoEG\" \/><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I&#8217;m going to search my Yu Chang collection to see if I can find <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">more.&nbsp; Meanwhile, I&#8217;m asking all the haijin out there to submit, by <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">email <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">or as a Comment, some <EM>haiku-sans-e<\/EM>.&nbsp; Please don&#8217;t cheat by <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">resorting to extremely truncated poems.&nbsp; Let&#8217;s make&nbsp;9 or 10&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">syllables <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">(as in the dagosan example above) the minimum.&nbsp;&nbsp; One tactic <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">might be taking one of your favorite haiku and re-writing it without <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">an <EM>e<\/EM>.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Everyone is invited to join <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in this exercise, but if you don&#8217;t know what <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">we mean here by &#8220;real haiku,&#8221; <\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\">please read&nbsp;<SPAN>&#8220;<A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3908\"><FONT color=\"#000000\">is it or ain&#8217;t it haiku?<\/FONT><\/A>&#8221; for <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><SPAN>a quick lesson. (Yes, the Haiku Police are on patrol.)<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><SPAN>If the book is as good as the critics have suggested, Georges Perec <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/hattipsmall.gif\" alt=\"hat tip small\" \/><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><SPAN>deserves a hat-tip for his achievement in <EM>A Void<\/EM>.&nbsp;
