Domestic Violence is a serious subject — one I ran into a lot in my <\/FONT><\/DIV>

decade practicing in family court.  Like all serious subjects, though, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
it should be addressed without hyperbole and fear-mongering, and <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
certainly without distorting statistics. One of the biggest distortion <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
campaigns in recent years is the one stating that Super Bowl Sunday <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
has the highest incidence of domestic violence against women of any <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
day in our national calendar.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

debunking the SB\/DV link, in its “<\/FONT>Super Bull Sunday<\/FONT><\/A>,” which includes <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
a timeline by <\/FONT>Christina Hoff Summers<\/FONT><\/A> showing<\/FONT> “how the apocryphal <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
statistic about domestic violence on Super Bowl Sunday was foisted <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
upon the public over the course of a few days leading up to the Super <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Bowl in January 1993″  — when the group FAIR convinced NBC Television <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
network to run a public service announcement prior to the start of the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Super Bowl broadcast. The announcement warned: “Domestic violence <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
is a crime.” The Snopes piece states: <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
“Unfortunately, nearly every cause will encompass a sub-group <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of advocates who, either through deliberate disingenuousness <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
or earnest gullibility, end up spreading ‘noble lies’ in the further-<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
ance of that cause. The myth of Super Bowl Sunday violence is <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
one such noble lie.” <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“Sommers concluded, ‘How a belief in that misandrist canard <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
can make the world a better place for women is not explained’.”   <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

\"bully When pressed for statistics, in 1993, those who most strongly touted <\/FONT><\/DIV>

the SB\/DV link basically stated<\/A> they never said they had statistical studies,<\/FONT><\/DIV>

advocates (suggesting a 40% increase in incidents).  Statistics backing <\/FONT><\/DIV>

up the link still do not exist, but we discuss a study below that rebutts it.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV>

These debunking efforts led to many articles last January saying that <\/FONT><\/DIV>

“Domestic violence numbers go up in January<\/FONT><\/A>” (Feb. 3, 2006). <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

Why am I irked and writing on this topic today?  It’s because I searched <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Google News for Super Bowl” +”domestic violaence<\/EM>“> yesterday and <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
found a number of results on the first two pages that linked to efforts to <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
re-establish the connection.  None of them present any additional, useful <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
evidence or argument.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n

\n
For example, an article at the Alcoholism\/Substance-Abuse section of <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
About.com<\/EM> asks “<\/FONT><\/FONT>Does Domestic Violence Increase<\/FONT><\/A> on Super Bowl <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Sunday?”  In a section labelled “Debunking the Debunkers”, however, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the piece merely repeats the 1993 <\/FONT>claims<\/FONT><\/A> by FAIR spokesperson Laura <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Flanders that the group had never claimed to have statistics or studies, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
but was using anectodal evidence.  About concludes: <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
“What is the bottom line on this issue? Flanders’ article spelled <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
it out: “Workers at women’s shelters, and some journalists, have <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
long reported that Super Bowl Sunday is one of the year’s worst <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
days for violence against women in the home. FAIR hoped that <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the broadcast of an anti-violence PSA on Super Sunday, in front <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of the biggest TV audience of the year, would sound a wake-up <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
call for the media, and it did.”

“That PSA saved lives, Flanders said.”<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/DIV>
\n

Not a lot of meat there.  Nonetheless, the About.com piece ends up being<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the most substantive one I could find. WFAA-TV, KVUE.com in Austin, TX, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
has an online article, by Rebecca Lopez, Feb. 3, 2006.<\/SPAN> that is headlined <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
“Super Bowl weekend may see domestic violence rise<\/EM><\/A>,” <\/SPAN>  Here is the entire <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
piece:<\/SPAN> <\/STRONG><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

“This weekend<\/SPAN> may be a big one for football fans but there’s also a <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
darker side many people may not realize. Super Bowl Sunday is a very <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
busy day for domestic violence calls. Around the world – one out of every <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
her lifetime. Many people watched yesterday’s police car chase unfold <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
on television. A man holding a rifle to his girlfriend after allegedly kidnap-<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
ping <\/SPAN>her and her young daughter.” <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>

Finally, on Feb. 3, KVEWtv in Washington State’s Apple Valley had a segment\/<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
article headlined “<\/FONT>Police Expect Busy Super Sunday <\/FONT>Domestic violence calls<\/FONT><\/A>  <\/FONT><\/U><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and drunk driving arrests spike during Super Bowl,” by Jessica Swain. Here is <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the entire text, which never again mentions domestic violence: <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
“Super Bowl Sunday traditionally makes for a busy evening for law <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
enforcement in the Mid-Columbia. Extra Washington State troopers <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
will be on the highways, and police will be watching streets within city <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
limits looking for drunk drivers. Police say with the Seahawks in the <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
game this year, it’s sure to be a party in the Mid-Columbia.  “If you <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
start doing 2, 3, 4 drinks an hour, you’re becoming intoxicated and so <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
you need to monitor it and if you’re a party make sure there’s food,” <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>

plan <\/SPAN>ahead, designate a sober driver or take a cab home.”<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
All Hat and No Cattle.<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>

Before I leave this topic, I want to address two more issues: First, at his <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
weblog <\/FONT>Communication, Cognition, and Arbitrary Thoughts<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A>, S.D. <\/FONT><\/SPAN>“Sam” <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Bradley has a post today called “<\/FONT>Regrettable side of the Super <\/FONT><\/A><\/SPAN>Bowl<\/FONT><\/A>.”   <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
Sam presents data from a significant study headed by <\/FONT>Walter Gantz<\/FONT><\/A>, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
that looked at the SB\/DV link.  They were not able to get statistics from <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
women’s shelters and emergency rooms, but they did receive date-specific <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
information on 911 domestic violence dispatches from 15 of the 30 police <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
departments in NFL cities that we targeted — ending up with 26,192 days <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of domestic violence data.  <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/SPAN><\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
Despite the headline on the post, Ganz et al.<\/EM> did not find a significant <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
showing that the Super Bowl is a domestic violence villain:<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
“<\/SPAN>In the final analysis, we were looking at 1,366,518 separate <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
domestic violence dispatches. How many were statistically <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
related to the Super Bowl? According to our analysis, 272 of <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
those incidents were due to a Super Bowl falling on a given <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
day (we also included the day following the Super Bowl to <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
apture any 911 dispatches that happened after midnight since <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the Super Bowl starts so late on the East coast). In the total <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
pool of incidents, this is a small fraction (.0199 percent); however, <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
f<\/SPAN>or those 272 individuals, the threat is very real. <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/SPAN><\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
<\/SPAN>“If we look at all of the incidents on Super Bowl days, then those <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
272 incidents represent 6.5% of the total incidents for those days. <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
This is no small increase — especially for those involved. To put the <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Super Bowl in perspective, however, our analysis predicted that 1,238 <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
incidents — almost 1,000 more — were due to Christmas.”<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n

Sam explains further: “In the end, the Super Bowl does not look like a Super <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>

villain. Instead, it looks a lot like a holiday<\/EM>. The Super Bowl puts more people <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
together and sprinkles in alcohol. In the final piece, we wrote:<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
 “Viewed from this perspective, it appears that the Super Bowl has <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
all of the elements to spark holiday-related domestic violence: increased <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
expectations, close domestic interaction, and alcohol consumption.”<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
An earlier <\/FONT>press release<\/FONT><\/A> for their preliminary study said it well:<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n

\n
“Previous studies have raised concerns about a pattern of violent behavior <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
against women around the time of the Super Bowl. But the preliminary<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
study . .  found that the number of cases that day was relatively small <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
compared to those reported on holidays such as Christmas or Memorial <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Day.”<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n

between the Super Bowl and Domestic Violence have us do?<\/EM>  Most important,<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
what would they have “high-risk” women do?   Tell their significant other they <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
will be on guard, invite protectors to their home, pack a weapon?   Today, at her <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
Banned Breed<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A> weblog, Raine Devries has a post called “Serious Sunday,” where <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
she states (emphasis added):  <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n

\n
“Before I get to the heart of today’s opinion, I would like to mention <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
that on Super Bowl Sunday, there are higher than normal <\/EM>reports <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
of domestic violence. If you or someone you know is at risk today, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
please invite them to a film, go to a restaurant, or just get together and <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
watch something on TV — just get them out of the line of fire for a few hours<\/EM>.”<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
That sounds to me like a recipe for turning what could be an enjoyable day for a <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
couple into a major sore spot — before and after the woman gets home.  If the male  <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
is drunk, and either unhappy or empowered by the results of the Game, the “today,<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
I’m really<\/EM> afraid of you” posture does not seem to be desirable or beneficial.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN> <\/DIV>

As I said at the top, Domestic Violence is serious business. It deserves serious, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>

frank discussion, treatment and action.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
