terminology and the <A href=\"http:\/\/blawgreview.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/old-lawyers-have-web-logs.html\"><FONT color=\"black\">defense<\/FONT><\/A>&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">of its usage by <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><FONT color=\"black\">the Editor of <EM>Blawg Review.<\/EM>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Zimmer<\/FONT> takes a look at&nbsp;what<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">makes &#8220;blawg&#8221; such an interesting portmanteau or&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;blend <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">word,&#8221;&nbsp;with special emphasis on the morphophono<\/FONT><\/SPAN><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">logical <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">aspects of the word. <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/shiftKeyneg001.gif\" alt=\"shift key neg\" \/><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">For an interesting peek at another profession that is (literally) <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>focused <\/SPAN><SPAN>on parsing words and making fine distinctions,&nbsp;law-<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>types&nbsp;<\/SPAN><SPAN>could not do better than checking out Zimmer&#8217;s post&nbsp;<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">bisecting the <EM>blog-law-blawg<\/EM> portmanteau.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">For example,&nbsp;he explains&nbsp;that one type of blended word is <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">the sandwich variety, where part of one of the blended words&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">is inserted into the other word (rather&nbsp;than attached to it). A&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>famous example is Lewis Carroll&#8217;s &#8220;chortle,&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;where&nbsp; <\/SPAN><SPAN><EM>chortle = <\/EM><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>ch(uck)le + (sn)ort.<\/EM> .&nbsp; But, &#8220;blawg&#8221; is unique: <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;The recipe for such sandwich words is pretty constant: <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">take a polysyllabic word and replace the primarily-stressed <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">syllable with a punchy monosyllabic word of your choice. <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">It&#8217;s clear, however, that <SPAN style=\"FONT-STYLE: italic\">blawg<\/SPAN> is a different beast, morpho-<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">phonologically speaking. <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bgbg.blogspot.com\/\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Denise Howell<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> took a monosyllabic <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">word (<SPAN style=\"FONT-STYLE: italic\">blog<\/SPAN>) and inserted another monosyllable (<SPAN style=\"FONT-STYLE: italic\">law<\/SPAN>), such <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">that the &#8220;bread&#8221; for the sandwich consists merely of one <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">initial consonant (<SPAN style=\"FONT-STYLE: italic\">b-<\/SPAN>) and one final consonant (-<SPAN style=\"FONT-STYLE: italic\">g<\/SPAN>). I know <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">of no other sandwich word so dominated by its filling.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/dictionaryN.gif\" alt=\"dictionaryN\" \/><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>&#8220;<\/SPAN><SPAN>What&#8217;s more, the two component words are maximally over-<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">lapping for some speakers and nearly so for others. . . . &#8220;<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">[<EM>Ed note<\/EM>: a discussion of whether &#8220;blawg&#8221; sounds like <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;blog,&#8221; and if it matters, follows.]<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">After this brief exposure to linguistics,&nbsp;it seems to me that linguists <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">are science-minded persons, who&nbsp;like words more than numbers, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">and are too nice to want to be lawyers.&nbsp; Like lawyers, however, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">they apparently do tend to take liberties when describing the pos-<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>itions of <\/SPAN><SPAN>others.&nbsp; Thus, where I said I was surprised, Benjamin says <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>I&nbsp;am <\/SPAN><SPAN>&#8220;shocked.&#8221;&nbsp; Where I merely gave a prominent example, he says <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">I am &#8220;troubled.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/SPAN>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">One thing for sure, I bet Benjamin and Mark would be quite annoyed, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><SPAN><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">if someone wanted to permanently call their weblog a &#8220;<EM>bling<\/EM>&#8220;, merely <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>because <\/SPAN><SPAN>weblogs by linguists are <EM>so <\/EM>unique.<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN><EM><STRONG>p.s.<\/STRONG><\/EM> (Jan. 25, 10 AM): Just a quick apology to <A href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~bgzimmer\/\">Benjamin Zimmer<\/A> <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><SPAN>for mistakenly calling him &#8220;Zimmerman&#8221;
