I’ve got to stop being surprised when people don’t fit into the little <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>

pigeonholes that still inhabit the nether regions of my psyche. That’s <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
especially true when it comes to who does or doesn’t take a shine <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
to haiku poetry (or to this website).  After all, it was your humble editor <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
who penned <\/FONT><\/SPAN>“yes, lawyers & haiku<\/A>”  twenty-five months ago, when <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
ethicalEsq<\/EM> <\/FONT><\/SPAN>was transformed into a punditry+haiku-advocacy weblog.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT><\/SPAN> <\/DIV>
\n
This post memorializes my most pleasant surprise over the intense  \"umpireG\" \"umpireS\" \"umpireS\"<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
interest in haikai<\/A><\/EM> (and its many controversial\/conflicting rules) <\/SPAN>demon-<\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
strated this <\/SPAN>evening by Will Wilson, <\/SPAN>the Editor <\/SPAN>of AG Watch<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A>.  AG Watch<\/EM> <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
is <\/EM><\/SPAN>“the Eye on Attorneys General” of the <\/EM><\/SPAN>American Enterprise Institute’s <\/EM><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Federalism Project<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A>.   We communicated for the first time on Jan. 5th, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
when I sent Will a heads-up about <\/FONT>our post<\/FONT><\/A> on The State Center<\/U><\/FONT>.  Will <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
thanked me for the information with a “haiku” — that he admitted was <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
“bad.”  Unable to resist, I suggested Will read <\/FONT>>is it or ain’t it haiku?<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A> for <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>

Tonight, I found out how dangerous it can be to willy-nilly turn someone <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
on to the mysteries and miseries of haiku, and its definition and creation.<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
The result was the AG Watch<\/EM> post Let’s Zappai the Whole Thing<\/EM><\/A> (Jan. 7, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
2006), in which Will uses <\/FONT>George Swede’s guidelines<\/FONT><\/A> for writing haiku <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
as the framework for questioning the wisdom of having 50 state attorneys <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
general enforce the antitrust laws.   After pointing out the similarities <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
between haiku and antitrust (especially their superficial simplicity, which <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
makes them seem “easy to do”), Will says:<\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n

<\/SPAN>“Given the general similarities between antitrust and haiku, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>

perhaps George Swede’s five guidelines<\/A> of haiku, read broadly, <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>

de force<\/EM> is a great read, and is thought-provoking.  I’m pleased to have <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
instigated his burst of creativity (while suspicious<\/A> that he might have <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
been avoiding some other deadline), and grateful that Will has become <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
\n
a fan of haiku and this website and is exposing both to the readers of <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV>
