Last year<\/FONT><\/A>, f\/k\/a<\/EM> let it <\/FONT>slide<\/FONT><\/A>.  Like the devil quoting scripture or an appellate <\/FONT><\/DIV>

lawyer choosing caselaw to cite, we cherry-picked banned words <\/FONT>from <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the Banished Words List<\/A><\/EM> <\/FONT>that Lake Superior State <\/FONT><\/A>University<\/FONT><\/A> <\/FONT>publishes <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
annually, <\/FONT>without <\/FONT>critiquing <\/FONT>the overall quality of the list.   [e.g<\/EM>., we touted <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the censoring of “<\/FONT>blog<\/FONT><\/A>” in 2005 and “<\/FONT>bling-bling<\/FONT><\/A>” in 2004] <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
So caught up in ends rather than means, f\/k\/a<\/EM> even urged<\/A> readers to <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
make <\/FONT>particular <\/FONT>suggestions to LSSU for this year’s list.   Now, how- <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
ever, under our <\/FONT>newly <\/FONT>adopted motto of “carpe diem<\/EM>” — Sicilian for<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
“complain daily<\/FONT>” or maybe “wrap the fish with this weblog” — <\/FONT>we’ve <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
got to come clean: the LSSU list is far too banal and <\/FONT>amateurish to <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
deserve all the attention<\/A> it garners, even considering <\/FONT>that the New Year’s <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
holiday is usually a slow period for news.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
\"erasingS\" In fact, given how little there is to do at LSSU, there<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
is <\/FONT>no<\/EM> excuse <\/FONT>for a list that appears to have been drawn out<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of a hat, from unfiltered <\/FONT>sources, and then embellished by <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the remedial English class with <\/FONT>explanations that mostly <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
came from the original complainant, unedited for <\/FONT>proper logic, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
grammar or syntax. <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
Why is f\/k\/a<\/EM> turning its mighty weblog cannon on this tiny educational <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
outpost?  First, because we can; and second, because the college’s <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Public Relations Department began the Banishment List in 1975  “as <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
a publicity ploy<\/A> for little-known LSSU.”   If the List is meant to attract <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
attention to LSSU, it is surely fair to ask what it tells us about this seat <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of higher <\/FONT>learning.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
 <\/DIV>
\n
The history<\/A> page for the List tells us: <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
                                                                               “OLD&NEWyearS”<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“The first list was dreamed up by [Public Relations  Director<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
W. T. “Bill”] Rabe and a group of friends at a New Year’s <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Eve party in 1975. The following day, he released the list <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and the rest, as they say, is history. Since then, nominations <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
for words and expressions to be banished have been invited <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and accepted throughout the year. . . . <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“After Rabe retired in 1987, the University copyrighted the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
concept and continued the tradition. The popularity of the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
effort shows no signs of dwindling.  Hundreds of nominations <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
are received each year.” <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
Thus, the first List was done overnight (probably while imbibing spiked <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
eggnog), while LSSUers now toil for an entire year on each Banned List, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
with input from around the world.  Judge for yourself whether the <\/FONT>2006<\/FONT><\/A> <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
List is an improvement on the <\/FONT>1976 version<\/FONT><\/A> (or the <\/FONT>ones<\/FONT><\/A> in between).  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
We don’t think so.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

Right off, notice that there are 17 items.  As George Carlin ably <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
demonstrated in his <\/FONT>When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A> <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
(at 14<\/A>), when you have a list, “Ten sounds important,” and other <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
numbers just don’t seem serious.  Seventeen suggests there <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
simply were no clear criteria for making the cut.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
More persua<\/FONT>sive on the lack of a standard is the fact that so <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
many of the <\/FONT>items have nothing to do with the year 2005<\/EM>. As the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
AP<\/EM><\/A> reports notes, “Many of the phrases banned this year are not <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
new.”  To which I add, “and were not used in a noticeably different <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
or increased manner last year.”  Examples are: <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
“first-time caller<\/EM>” — should have been banned <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
at least of decade ago by Rush Limbaugh himself.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“pass the savings on to you!<\/EM>” — <\/EM>I bet a Michigan <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
fisherman was using this sales pitch before the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
State got into the Union.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“97 percent fat-free<\/EM>” — not this well-padded List<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“Talking points<\/EM>” — was all talked-out years ago<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“An accident that didn’t have to happen<\/EM>” — not <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
exactly a cliche.  Was it used a lot in 2005?<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
\"GitErDoneN\"<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
 Larry the Cable Guy <\/FONT>t-shirt<\/FONT><\/A><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
Frankly, I saw no uptick in the use of “surreal” and I had <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
never even heard of “Git-Er-Done<\/EM>” until I saw it on this List <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
(perhaps<\/A> a side benefit of my avoiding sports channels). <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Are the students and professors (and PR folk) at LSSU <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
watching too much television, or am I watching too little? <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
As for “breaking news,” all urgency was sucked out of <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
that phrase with the birth of 24-hour news cycles (not to<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
mention Entertainment Tonight<\/EM>).<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
The List-makers also seem to be willing to throw out both <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the baby and the frozen bath water.  “Dawg<\/EM>” (which was <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
used in print for “dog” as early as <\/FONT>1898<\/FONT><\/A>, <\/FONT><\/FONT>but <\/FONT>still<\/FONT><\/A> isn’t<\/FONT> in<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the online Rap Dictionary<\/EM>), for example, <\/FONT>comes in handy <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
when a guy wants to show a degree of amiability <\/FONT>toward <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
another male, without showing too much<\/EM> affection.  Also, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
we simply can’t go around banning all terms of endearment <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
that refer to animals.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
Similarly, “person of interest<\/A>” is a very useful<\/FONT><\/A> phrase for  \"erasingSF\"<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
law enforcement to use when it does not have sufficient <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
information (or strategically is not ready) to classify some-<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
one as a suspect, subject, target.  Before banning it, we <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
suggest the fire science and criminal justice faculty and <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
students at LSSU come up with a more appropriate term.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
What does the Banished Word List tell us about LSSU? <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
We don’t know <\/FONT>whether the List was actually <\/FONT>drafted by <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
teachers, students or <\/FONT>public relations staff, but we can say <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
that whoever is responsible can’t stay on task, anticipate <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
consequences, or write persuasively<\/FONT>.   All in all, not the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
kind of image that would seem to help the School’s <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
admissions mission.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
Just as George Carlin<\/A> whittled the Commendments down <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
from Ten <\/FONT>to Two, we’d like to suggest that the LSSU List <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
would be better if stripped down to Four timely phrases<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
this year:<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
• Up-or-down vote<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
• Designer breed<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
<\/FONT><\/DIV>• Junk science<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
• Git-er-done<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
We’re giving “Git-er-Done” the benefit of the doubt,  \"GitErDoneG\"  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
(mostly so we can use this nifty image again by <\/FONT>Cable Guy<\/FONT><\/A>).<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
But, we (a) will all need FEMA at some point and should not <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
throw out the acronym; (b) should retain <\/FONT>the <\/FONT>right to “hunker <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
down” as necessary<\/FONT>; and (c) need to be <\/FONT>reminded about the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
faux War on Christmas that was sparked <\/FONT>this year by Holiday <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Trees.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
Skeptics might think that this critique stems from LSSU’s failure <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
to include our choice for the most odious phrase of the year —  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
“nuclear option<\/A><\/EM>.”   Skeptics aren’t always wrong, but we believe <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
our motives are pure.    Of course, if you happen to be making <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
your own List of Banned or Closely-Regulated Words and Phrases,<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
please do check out <\/FONT>our argument<\/FONT><\/A> regarding “nuclear option,” <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
which we (like columnist <\/FONT>Ellen Goodman<\/FONT><\/A>) believe should be <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
limited to “the real thing” — nuclear war or nuclear <\/FONT>power plants<\/FONT><\/A>. <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
Once “nuclear option” was used by Senators and the press to <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
refer to the filibuster rules of the U.S. Senate, its use spread <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
to other political and social actions and decisions that various <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
actors or reports thought might  <\/FONT>have serious <\/FONT>consequences.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
The f\/k\/a<\/EM> Gang believes this <\/FONT>misused, overused and confusing <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
metaphor <\/FONT>is <\/FONT>representative of a sorry trend of verbal abuse that <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
amounts <\/FONT>to neglect of our language legacy<\/A>.  As we said last <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
May:<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
\"bombFuse\"  “The lazy linguistic practice (often perpetrated <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and <\/FONT><\/FONT>perpetuated by the popular media) of using familiar, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>

analogous situations not merely to explain<\/EM> a new concept, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
but also to name<\/EM> <\/FONT>it, is making a mess of our language, with <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
more and more phrases simply <\/FONT>making no sense on their face.”  <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
(We used<\/A> “black box” and “DNA finger-<\/FONT>prints” as examples) <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT><\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
But, taking the term “nuclear option” out of the realm <\/FONT>of war <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
strategy, and using it in the context of U.S. Senate filibuster <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
rules is <\/FONT>several steps farther down the road toward language <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
lunacy.    <\/FONT><\/FONT>I don’t care <\/FONT>that a politican used the phrase.  The <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
media are in the <\/FONT><\/FONT>communications <\/FONT>business, they need to use <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
words that express <\/FONT><\/FONT>meaning.  Did anyone think <\/FONT>of calling it the <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Filibuster-Buster <\/FONT><\/FONT>Option?<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/FONT><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
“toiletpaperf”  Does LSSU give “gentleman’s C’s”?  Maybe next year’s List <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
will deserve such a grade.  For now, we’re going to hand out a “D” <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and hope the sting will motivate all those involved in creating the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Banished Word List to try harder and do better.  The List might be <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
done<\/FONT><\/A> “tongue-in cheek,” but <\/FONT>there is no reason that cheeky tongues <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
can’t be eloquent, subtle, <\/FONT>and <\/FONT>insightful.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n

p.s.<\/EM><\/STRONG><\/FONT>   We would also like to nominate “heh<\/EM>” as a word that should <\/FONT><\/DIV>

be banned from the Blogiverse — or at least self-censored by any <\/FONT><\/DIV>

self-respecting weblogger other the <\/FONT><\/FONT>Big Guy<\/FONT><\/A> himself.  Merely alluding <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>

to Prof. Reynolds is not a good enough excuse for using this incredibly <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>

overused, surreally stale exclamation, whether to show mild-ironic <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
