But this year&#8217;s blow-up over church and store? As often<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> happens, a visit\u00a0last week to see the<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/riskprof.typepad.com\/tort\/2005\/12\/happy_st_nichol.html\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">Riskprof<\/span><\/a><\/em>, started me on a wide-ranging\u00a0tangent &#8212; this time, concerning <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Nicholas\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">St. Nicholas of Myra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">, whose feast day, December 6,\u00a0is still<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> quite important in many European countries, but passes quite unnoticed in most American homes. <\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">Thanks to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Nicholas\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">, to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.christmasarchives.com\/santa.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Chronology of Santa Clause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> at the Christmas\u00a0Archives,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> and especially to the extensive materials at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stnicholascenter.org\/Brix?pageID=23\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">St. Nicholas Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">, I learned (or re-learned) a lot about the historical Bishop Nicholas, and the myths and customs<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> that grew around his legend, and that eventually led to the contemporary Santa Claus personage (and excesses).\u00a0\u00a0 This St. Nicholas <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stnicholascenter.org\/Brix?pageID=458\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">Timeline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> is a useful place to\u00a0(re)acquaint<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> yourself\u00a0with his legend. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\" dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">The historical Nicholas was born around 270 AD, and became Bishop of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Myra\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> Myra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> (in modern-day Turkey) at an early age.\u00a0 He was credited with making many anonymous gifts from his personal fortune\u00a0for those in need.\u00a0 According<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> to The Christmas Archive, Nicholas &#8220;spent his life helping the poor and under-priviledged.
