One highlight of 2005 for me was playing bocce<\/FONT><\/A> in <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Schenectady’s Central Park with fellow haijin Yu Chang<\/A> <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and John Stevenson<\/A><\/FONT>.  As we contemplate our first <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
night with temperatures around zero, I’m afraid it might <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
be quite a while before we have another game of outdoor <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
bocce (see<\/EM> <\/FONT>Giacalone Family Informal<\/EM> Bocce Rules<\/FONT><\/A>.)<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
That’s too bad, because the addition of our neighbor <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Hilary Tann<\/A> to the f\/k\/a<\/EM> Honored Guest roll means <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
she will be expected to join us in 2006, which will allow <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
us to play the even more enjoyable and traditional two-team <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
version <\/FONT>of bocce.    <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
“bocceBallsG”<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT><\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
But<\/EM>, maybe we needn’t wait until Spring.  I’ve been joking <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
with John and Yu about getting together for Snow Bocce, and that <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
phrase turned up on my Keyword Activity list yesterday.  Back-<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
tracking <\/FONT>on the links, I discovered that the <\/FONT>Colebrook [NH] Kiwanis<\/FONT><\/A> <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Club <\/FONT>has “added an extremely popular event; the Peter Goudreau <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Sr. Memorial snow bocce tournament,” with this year’s <\/FONT>event<\/FONT><\/A> <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
to be held on February 11th. <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

The lawyer in me, naturally, wonders whether there <\/FONT>are <\/FONT>any  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
special rules for Snow Bocce.  So far, here’s the only version <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
I’ve been able to find on the internet:<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
Snow bocce<\/A> is played on freshly fallen snow; it needs  “snowflakeS” \"snowFlakeS\"<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
to be the kind of snow that is good for snowballs and <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
snowmen. It follows all the usual rules (see, for instance, <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
wikipedia: bocce<\/FONT><\/A>) except that the pallino and balls are all <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
made out of snow. As a result, the balls change size over <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the course of the game. Rolling across fresh snow, they <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
can get larger. If they are thrown too far, they may fragment <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
into multiple pieces. In that case, count the largest fragment <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
for the purposes of scoring. The other fragments may be left <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
where they fall. <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
To be honest, bocce balls made of snow would seem to be a <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
novelty that would quickly become tiresome and unwieldy.  If <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
any f\/k\/a<\/EM> visitors have other versions of Snow Bocce rules, or just <\/FONT><\/DIV>
