{"id":4262,"date":"2005-12-08T15:36:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-08T19:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/12\/08\/are-nurses-switching-to-law\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:54:20","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:54:20","slug":"are-nurses-switching-to-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/12\/08\/are-nurses-switching-to-law\/","title":{"rendered":"are nurses switching to law?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a5469'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">As you may have seen, this year&#8217;s Gallup Poll on&nbsp;&#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/poll.gallup.com\/content\/?ci=20254\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Honesty and Ethical Ratings<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">of People in Different Professions&#8221; (<EM>Gallup News Service<\/EM>, Dec. 5, 2005) found <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">nurses again firmly on top, with lawyers far behind.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/trustmeflip.gif\" alt=\"trust me flip\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Americans were asked &#8220;to rate the honesty and ethical standards of members of&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">professions on a five-point scale that ranges from &#8220;very high&#8221; to &#8220;very low.&#8221;&nbsp; Eighty-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">two percent said that Nurses rated High or Very High, while only 18 percent put <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Lawyers at the high end of honesty and ethics.&nbsp; On the other hand, thirty-five percent <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">of those surveyed said Lawyers have Low or Very Low honesty and ethics, while a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">mere three percent rated Nurses that low.&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Given those results, I had to follow up, when I discovered yesterday that someone <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">had Googled <A href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;q=how%20do%20i%20become%20a%20lawyer%20as%20a%20registered%20nurse&amp;spell=1\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">how do i become a lawyer as a registered nurse<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&gt;. [By the way, the&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;# 1 result out of 1.75 million was an <EM>f\/k\/a<\/EM> <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/11\/17#a5311\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">post<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> that mentioned Mary Coffin, who <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">switched from nursing to law in her 40s.]&nbsp; My quick research turned up a 2001&nbsp;article <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">from the <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/specialreports\/2001\/nursing\/sunflight\/sunflight.htm\">Detroit News<\/A><\/EM> entitled &#8220;Weary nurses find jobs, joy in other professions.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">article quoted Barbara Redman, dean of the Wayne State University School of Nursing, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">saying that nurses may be leaving traditional clinical roles, but they aren&#8217;t &#8220;abandoning <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">their public service role of caring for patients.&#8221;&nbsp; The article then states:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8216;Ann Mandt, a Detroit attorney and registered nurse, agreed: &#8216;I&#8217;m doing the&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8220;ivstand&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">same thing I did as a nurse. I&#x2019;m taking care of patients&#8217;.&#x201D;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">According to her <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.charfooschristensenpc.com\/attyBiog.jsp?x=1419555&amp;y=1419533&amp;z=1186913\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">firm profile<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">, at the plaintiff&#8217;s personal injury firm of Charfoos &amp; Christen-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">sen, Mandt &#8220;is involved in all areas of practice, including medical malpractice, drug <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">products litigation, legal malpractice, mass tort and multiple\/complex litigation.&#8221;&nbsp; I <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">wonder how many of those surveyed for Gallup&#8217;s poll would consider that to be &#8220;doing <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">the same thing I did as a nurse . . . taking care of patients&#8221;?<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/ambulance.gif\" alt=\"ambulance\" \/>&nbsp;&nbsp; My web search also located the interesting case of <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.njvoterinfo.org\/?p=c\/latigona.php \"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Michael Latigona<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">, a critical <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">care <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">ambulance transport Registered Nurse, who&nbsp;was recently a&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelforgovernor.com\/\"><FONT color=\"black\" size=\"2\">gubernatorial candidate<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">in <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">New Jersey and has just announced formation of the One New Jersey Party.&nbsp; At a<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">candidate information <A href=\"http:\/\/www.njvoterinfo.org\/?p=c\/latigona.php\"><FONT color=\"black\">website<\/FONT><\/A>, which makes its reports &#8220;<EM>based on submissions by the <\/EM><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>candidate to the Eagleton Insitute of Politics,&#8221;<\/EM>&nbsp; I learned that Marlton resident Latigona <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;has more ethics and morals than any person we have ever known in the political arena.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">In addition he&nbsp;&#8220;has taken up the study of law, although he admits ethically he could not <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">become a lawyer.:&nbsp;&nbsp;He states, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;I could not in good faith become a lawyer, although I have always wanted to. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">I cannot lie or embellish to represent a client. It&#8217;s just not in my nature to do <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">so. Rather than going home and reading a book like the DaVinci Code, I go <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">home and read New Jersey statutes, interpret court decisions, and follow the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">latest in legal decisions and legislation. I love the law, and know exactly how <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">to use it for all New Jerseyan&#8217;s. I&#8217;ve studied it for over ten years now.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">. . . .&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Who do you think will do the job better, a businessman, a lawyer, or a Regis-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">tered Nurse who places people first, knows the law, and exactly how to use it?&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">The website concludes &#8212; apparently based on candidate-submitted materials &#8212;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">that &#8220;Latigona has an acute awareness of how to use the law, and how New Jersey-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">an&#8217;s can benefit from someone like himself who chooses to use the power of an <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">elected position to get the job done.&#8221;&nbsp; At Latigona&#8217;s former campaign website we learn <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">that he will run for Mayor or Town Council in 2006, and he &#8220;vows if Governor elect Jon <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Corzine does not fulfill his promises, he will start a recall in one year as law allows.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Where is this post going?&nbsp; Darned if I know.&nbsp; It&#8217;s difficult to say whether&nbsp;disgruntled&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">nurses&nbsp;will&nbsp;find career satisfaction in the law, much less joy.&nbsp;
