If you’re a lawyer, judge or law professor in a big City (or even a lowly law <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
student), there’s a big chance you don’t spend much <\/FONT>social <\/FONT>time with folk <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
from outside the legal profession.  Here’s my recommendation for meeting<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
an <\/FONT>assortment of interesting and friendly people, who cross generations and <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
careers<\/FONT><\/FONT>, but share a love of language well-used and small moments <\/FONT><\/FONT>experi-<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
enced <\/FONT><\/FONT>fully: <\/FONT><\/FONT>join<\/FONT><\/A> the <\/FONT>Haiku Society of America.<\/FONT><\/A><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n

<\/FONT><\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
Where did that rather self-absorbed notion come from, you might ask?  Well, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
I just attended <\/FONT><\/FONT>my first HSA meeting <\/FONT>(on Saturday, Dec. 3rd, in NYC) and <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
(a) had a great time — such that I’m <\/FONT><\/FONT>not even<\/EM> going to complain about my post-<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
trip aches and pains and fatigue;<\/FONT> (b) <\/FONT>met, and started to get to know, <\/FONT>people <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
behind <\/FONT>names I have been seeing in haiku publications for years and <\/FONT>people <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
with unfamiliar names but friendly faces and intriguing stories. And,<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
(c) Learned that HSA has been doing very little promotion of itself and virtually <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
no outreach to increase its membership, which now stands at about 800 — <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
with more than 75 members in New England, over 150 in the Northeast Metro <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
area, and over a 100 in both the Southeast and Midwest, plus 90+ in California,<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and 3 in Alaska.<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n

\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
Thus, this is my weblog-Google-friendly attempt to tell people about the Haiku <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Society <\/FONT>of America.   Along with the regular membership fee of $33 ($30 for students <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and <\/FONT>senior citizens), come the three annual editions of Frogpond<\/A><\/EM> — HSA’s haiku <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
journal (and source of many f\/k\/a<\/EM> haiku and senryu); newsletters; plus much <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
good feeling, camaradie. and occasional familial wrangling.  <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
\"tiny The chance to mingle <\/FONT>with the living history and future <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of English-Language haiku is pretty exciting, too.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
\"NewRes4\"  One highlight of the HSA Meeting was acquiring the brand new book,<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
New Resonance 4: Emerging Voices in English-Language Haiku<\/EM> (edited by Jim<\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Kacian and Dee Evetts, <\/FONT>Red Moon Press<\/FONT><\/A>, 2005).  Even better was having three <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of the 17 poets featured in New Resonance 4<\/EM> read their own excellent work from <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the book — <\/FONT>Brenda J. Gannam, William Cullen Jr., and Efren Estevez (natives of <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Savannah, Havana and Petersburg [VA], respectively, and all transplanted to the <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

Another highpoint of the meeting was a Memorial for <\/FONT>Jerry Kilbride<\/FONT><\/A>, the much- <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
beloved poet\/bartender and HSA inspiration.  Our Honored Guest, <\/FONT>Pamela Miller <\/FONT><\/A><\/DIV>
\n
Ness<\/FONT><\/A> led the memorial.  I did not know Jerry, but was moved by the palpable <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
