Bush.\u00a0 I believe Kohut is wrong and that the Democrats should not attempt to wish away the fact that millions of voters &#8212; mostly evangelical and fundamental Christians and Catholics &#8212; went to the<\/font> polls specifically to show their moral repulsion at certain Democratic Party positions (especially Warren&#8217;s five &#8220;<\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pastors.com\/RWMT\/?artid=7543&amp;id=178\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">non-negotiable<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8221; issues: abortion, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, homosexual marriage, and euthanasia).<\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\" \/><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/font><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Democrats may never be able &#8212; or willing &#8212; to convert that non-negotiable part of the electorate.\u00a0 But, I think <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rklau.com\/tins\/archives\/2004\/11\/03\/as_ohio_goes_so_goes_the_nation.php\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Rick Klau<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"> is correct to\u00a0suggest that the Party badly needs leaders &#8220;on the national stage who are speaking authoritatively on moral issues.&#8221;\u00a0 (The only current example he can give is the new Senator-elect from Illinois, <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.obamaforillinois.com\/\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Barack Obama<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">.)\u00a0 We need those morally-authoritative leaders, not only because taking a stance on issues of right and wrong is the right thing to do, but because Democrats can only overcome the loss of those millions of fundamentalist voters by appealing to the values\u00a0of a broader segment of American society, who believe that governing requres the constant application of our nation&#8217;s core moral precepts &#8212; although\u00a0<em>not<\/em> the particular dogma of any one Faith.\u00a0 <\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">So, when Larry <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lessig.org\/blog\/archives\/002279.shtml\"><font color=\"#000000\">Lessig says<\/font><\/a> our critcism of the Bush Administration &#8220;must now focus narrowly\u00a0on <font size=\"2\">policies,<\/font>&#8221; we mustn&#8217;t be shy to\u00a0point out\u00a0when a policy is immoral.\u00a0 Naturally, we should save the Morality Card for clearcut and important issues.<\/font><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">I agree with author <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/032127640X\/qid=1099529406\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/102-7331272-8269746?v=glance&amp;s=books\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Fiorina<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"> that our society is <em>not as deeply divided<\/em> as the media and party tacticians suggest.\u00a0 There is a broad consensus on values.\u00a0 But, the Democrats have not been willing to embrace that consensus by using morality themes.\u00a0 That&#8217;s partly to do with the allergy to religion that many Baby Boomers of the Left developed as they rebelled against the hypocricy they saw in their religions of birth.\u00a0 And, partly to do with buying into the bogus notion that effective moral principles cannot exist outside of religion (see, <em>e.g<\/em>.,\u00a0The Catholic Encyclopedia on <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/wp-admin\/As%20church%20leaders,%20we%20know%20our%20congregations%20are%20not%20allowed%20to%20endorse%20specific%20candidates,%20and%20it\u2019s%20important%20for%20us%20to%20recognize%20that%20there%20can%20be%20multiple%20opinions%20among%20Bible-believing%20Christians%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20debatable%20issues%20such%20as%20the%20economy,%20social%20programs,%20Social%20Security,%20and%20the%20war%20in%20Iraq.\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">morality<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">, as well as <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.professorbainbridge.com\/2004\/10\/running_the_wor.html\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Prof. Bainbridge<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">).<\/font><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"checker neg\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/checkerneg.gif\" \/>\u00a0 And, I agree with the statement of Sojourners&#8217; Jim Wallis on the News Hour tonight that: &#8220;[V]alues are a good conversation for politics. It may be the future of our discussion. But it can&#8217;t just be partisan values wedged in to divide people. But I think a<strong> broader sense of values, personal and social &#8212; personal responsibility and social responsibility together are at the heart of religion.<\/strong> The two together will provide a powerful political vision for the future.&#8221;\u00a0 (emphasis added)<\/font><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Wallis expanded on this theme in his <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sojo.net\/index.cfm?action=sojomail.display&amp;issue=041103#3\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">column<\/font><\/a><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><font color=\"#000000\"> this<\/font> morning:\u00a0 <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\"><em><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">We&#8217;ve now begun<strong> a real debate in this country over what the most important &#8220;religious issues&#8221; are in politics<\/strong>, and that discussion will continue far beyond this election. The Religious Right fought to keep the focus on gay marriage and abortion and even said that good Christians and Jews could only vote for the president. But many moderate and progressive Christians disagreed. We insisted that <strong>poverty is also a religious issue<\/strong>, pointing to thousands of verses in the Bible on the poor. The <strong>environment<\/strong> &#8211; protection of God&#8217;s creation &#8211; is also one of our religious concerns. And millions of Christians in America believe the war in Iraq was not a &#8220;<strong>just war<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0 . . .\u00a0<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><em>Clearly, God is not a Republican or a Democrat, as we sought to point out, and the best <\/em>\u00a0<em>contribution of religion is precisely not to be ideologically predictable or loyally partisan but to <strong>maintain the moral independence to critique both the left and the right<\/strong>. <\/em><\/font><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><em><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"podium sf\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/podiumsf.gif\" \/>\u00a0 It is now key to remember that our vision &#8211; a progressive and prophetic vision of faith and politics &#8211; was not running in this election. John Kerry was, and he lost. Kerry did not strongly champion the poor as a religious issue and &#8220;moral value,&#8221; or make the war in Iraq a clearly religious matter. In his debates with George Bush, Kerry should have challenged the war in Iraq as an unjust war, as many religious leaders did &#8211; including Evangelicals and Catholics.
