{"id":4232,"date":"2005-11-23T11:36:33","date_gmt":"2005-11-23T15:36:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/11\/23\/pit-bull-as-compliment\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:54:23","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:54:23","slug":"pit-bull-as-compliment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/11\/23\/pit-bull-as-compliment\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8221; pit bull &#8221; as compliment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a5363'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Reacting to a post at <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.myshingle.com\/my_shingle\/2005\/11\/an_ethics_decis.html\"><EM><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">MyShingle<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;on the&nbsp;&#8220;pit bull&#8221;&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/fla.%20high%20court%20puts%20down%20Pape%20&amp;%20Chandler's%20Pit%20Bull\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">case<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> of Florida Bar v. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">Pape &amp; Chandler, <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/profile\/6456502\"><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Mary Whisner<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> at <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/trialadnotes.blogspot.com\/2005\/11\/is-it-good-to-be-considered-pit-bull_21.html\"><FONT color=\"#0000ff\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>Trial Ad Notes<\/EM> asks<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> a very good <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">question: &#8220;Is it good to be considered a pit bull in the courtroom?&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">(Nov. 21, 2005)&nbsp;.&nbsp; Whisner points out that during the 2004 presidential <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">campaign Ed Gillespie was called &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.reviewjournal.com\/lvrj_home\/2004\/Feb-13-Fri-2004\/news\/23209962.html\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#0000ff\" size=\"2\">President Bush&#8217;s pit bull<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">,&#8221; and notes:<\/FONT> <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t seem that he minds this &#8212; or that Republicans as <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a whole feel demeaned because the chairman of the Republican <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Party has that nickname. It&#8217;s ironic, because during the heat of <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the presidential campaign, i<\/FONT>t seemed that &#8220;trial lawyer&#8221; was used <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">as an insult, but &#8220;pit bull&#8221; was a term of respect.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/dogblack.gif\" alt=\"dog black\" \/> Of course, there is an even more recent example of a lawyer called <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">pit bull &#8212; Harriet Miers.&nbsp; According to the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/06\/20\/AR2005062001161.html \"><EM><FONT face=\"Arial\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">Washington Post<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> last June:&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;When he was governor of Texas, Bush offered a less formal <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">assessment at an awards ceremony, calling Miers &#8216;a pit bull <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in size 6 shoes.&#8217; The line stuck, in no small part because it <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">described her cool but dogged determination.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">You may recall that there were <A href=\"http:\/\/www.professorbainbridge.com\/2005\/10\/the_faith_card.html\"><FONT color=\"#0000ff\">a lot<\/FONT><\/A> of reasons given for Miers&#8217;&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/MiersBush.gif\" alt=\"MiersBush\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">unsuitability to become an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Court, but her pit-bull-like qualities were not one of them.
