{"id":4215,"date":"2005-11-15T15:13:23","date_gmt":"2005-11-15T19:13:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/11\/15\/cellphone-bandits-and-borrowe"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:54:24","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:54:24","slug":"cellphone-bandits-and-borrowers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/11\/15\/cellphone-bandits-and-borrowers\/","title":{"rendered":"cellphone bandits and borrowers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a5305'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><SPAN><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT face=\"Arial\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">One of the best things about visiting Washington, D.C., last week,<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">was having a print version of the <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.rochesterdandc.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/frontpage\">Post<\/A><\/EM> in my hands every day.&nbsp; Just <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">as it impressed me with its comprehensiveness and attitude when <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">I arrived in D.C. to attend college in 1967 (as compared with the <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">Rochester [NY] <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.rochesterdandc.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/frontpage\"><FONT color=\"#000000\">Democrat &amp; Chronicle<\/FONT><\/A><\/EM>), and bonded with me during <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">the Whitewater years, the <EM>Post<\/EM> has spoiled me again for my current <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">hometown rag, the Schenectady [NY]&nbsp;<A href=\"http:\/\/www.dailygazette.com\/\"><FONT color=\"#000000\"><EM>Gazette<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A>, as it&nbsp;had when I moved <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">here in 1988.&nbsp; (Note, though, that many of&nbsp;my D.C. friends believe <EM>WaPo<\/EM> <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">is not sufficiently aggressive investigating George W. Bush.) <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/wpLogo.gif\" alt=\"wpLogo\" \/><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">An odd&nbsp;local story in the <EM>Washington Post<\/EM> (and on all the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/sharedcontent\/dws\/wfaa\/latestnews\/stories\/wfaa051111_wz_cellphonebandit.4d42f811.html\">tv news<\/A> shows) <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">last week was the tale of the cell-phoning bank robber &#8212; a young woman <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">who recently robbed four banks in the Northern Virginia suburbs, and <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">appeared to be talking on a cell phone during three of the robberies, as <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">she showed&nbsp;each teller a box with a holdup note attached to it.&nbsp; <\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">into the night<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">we talk of <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">human cloning<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; snowflakes<\/DIV><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><\/FONT><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><A href=\"http:\/\/www.millikin.edu\/haiku\/writerprofiles\/PeggyLyles.html\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#ff0000\" size=\"1\">Peggy Lyles<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"1\"> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><A href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/1929820038\/qid=1106161035\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/104-1569557-1267912?v=glance&amp;s=books\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"1\"><EM>To Hear the Rain<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"1\"> (2002)<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<P><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">Well, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/11\/15\/AR2005111500182.html\">the news<\/A>&nbsp;today is that the alleged perp &#8212; 19-year old Candice&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/cellphonebandit.gif\" alt=\"cellphoneBandit\" \/><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">R. Martinez, originally of Sante Fe, NM, &#8212; was arrested without incident <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">this&nbsp;morning in Centreville, VA. While traditional haiku has all sorts <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">of elements that provide atmosphere, yours need only follow <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">the syllable rule. Your first line should have five syllables, the <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">second seven, and the third five again. As long as you have <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">most of your fingers intact, this should not cause a problem:<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><I>I like bees, they&#8217;re so <BR>Yellow and black, and yellow <BR>And black and yellow<\/I><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">Thanks to the <EM>Guide<\/EM>, I now know what a <A class=\" pos\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/dna\/h2g2\/A505577\" target=\"_top\"><FONT color=\"#000000\">Clerihew<\/FONT><\/A> is.&nbsp;&nbsp;(Of course,<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><A href=\"http:\/\/declarationsandexclusions.typepad.com\/foolblog\/\"><FONT color=\"#000000\">George<\/FONT><\/A> already knew.) <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>&nbsp;
