One of the best things about visiting Washington, D.C., last week,<\/DIV>
\n
was having a print version of the Post<\/A><\/EM> in my hands every day.  Just <\/DIV>
\n
as it impressed me with its comprehensiveness and attitude when <\/DIV>
\n
I arrived in D.C. to attend college in 1967 (as compared with the <\/DIV>
\n
Rochester [NY] Democrat & Chronicle<\/FONT><\/A><\/EM>), and bonded with me during <\/DIV>
\n
the Whitewater years, the Post<\/EM> has spoiled me again for my current <\/DIV>
\n
hometown rag, the Schenectady [NY] Gazette<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A>, as it had when I moved <\/DIV>
\n
here in 1988.  (Note, though, that many of my D.C. friends believe WaPo<\/EM> <\/DIV>
\n
is not sufficiently aggressive investigating George W. Bush.) <\/DIV>
\n

An odd local story in the Washington Post<\/EM> (and on all the tv news<\/A> shows) <\/DIV>
\n
last week was the tale of the cell-phoning bank robber — a young woman <\/DIV>
\n
who recently robbed four banks in the Northern Virginia suburbs, and <\/DIV>
\n
appeared to be talking on a cell phone during three of the robberies, as <\/DIV>
\n
she showed each teller a box with a holdup note attached to it.  <\/DIV>
\n

Well, the news<\/A> today is that the alleged perp — 19-year old Candice   \"cellphoneBandit\"<\/DIV>

R. Martinez, originally of Sante Fe, NM, — was arrested without incident <\/DIV>
\n
this morning in Centreville, VA. (“Alleged ‘Cell phone Bandit’ arrested<\/FONT><\/A>,”   <\/DIV>
\n
Nov. 15, 2005)   The cell-phone-phobic Prof. Yabut can’t wait to learn <\/DIV>
\n
whether Ms. Martinez was actually holding a conversation during the <\/DIV>
\n
robberies and, if so, whether the person on the other end of the call is <\/DIV>
\n
considered an accomplice.  Maybe Ken<\/FONT><\/A> or Mike<\/FONT><\/A> will offer an opinion.<\/DIV>
\n

Another highlight of my visit to D.C. was getting acquainted with good <\/DIV>

friends of some of my best friends.  On Sunday, we had a late and long <\/DIV>

brunch along the Potomac River in Georgetown.   It gave me a chance, <\/DIV>
\n
for example and purely serendiptiously,  to get to know a Georgetown U. <\/DIV>
\n
classmate who I had really only known from afar — Adele Deas Tobin<\/FONT><\/A>.  <\/DIV>
\n

as haiku advocate and missionary.  Most were willing to sit through my <\/DIV>

condemnation of a strict 5 – 7 – 5- syllable rule one<\/EM> time, but tended to <\/DIV>
\n
balk if a new audience got me going again.   If you need the lecture, <\/DIV>
