But,&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">we sure can relate to the <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">general queasiness <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">that comes from finding a mailbox stuffed <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">with glossy solicitations <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">from every educational institution <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">you &#8212; or an offspring of yours &#8212; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">have every attended.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/mailBoxG.gif\" alt=\"mailBoxG\" \/>&nbsp; This topic became topical for me, with yesterday&#8217;s <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">announcement that the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.prc.gov\/\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Post Rate Commission<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"> <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">has <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.prc.gov\/news\/13\/PressBookR2005-1.pdf\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">approved<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">a rate hike <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.usps.com\/ratecase\/welcome.htm\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">request<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"> of approximately 5.4% for most <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">kinds of mail <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">delivered by the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.usps.com\/\"><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">United States Postal Service<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">.&nbsp; (See AP\/<EM>Boston <\/EM><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>Globe<\/EM> <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local\/connecticut\/articles\/2005\/11\/01\/rate_commission_approves_2_cent_postage_rate_increase\/\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">article<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">).&nbsp; The news coincided with a dumpster-ful of <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">brochures and catalogues being stuffed into my home mailbox <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">this afternoon &#8212; many of them from schools or alumni associ-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">ations, and all of them receiving discounted rates under the USPS <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><A href=\"http:\/\/pe.usps.gov\/text\/dmm300\/ratesandfees.htm\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">rate schedule<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">.&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Let&#8217;s be clear: I do not begrudge the USPS getting two cents more <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">for first class postage starting in January 2006, and am not one of <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">those who bash USPS for poor service &#8212; necessitating <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.usps.com\/communications\/news\/strs\/05_0110.htm\"><FONT size=\"2\">this<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> great <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">PR letter from USPS.&nbsp; What I do wonder about is the special <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">break&nbsp;&#8212; the recommendation of a smaller rate increase &#8212; for <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">non-profit entities.&nbsp; According to the Associated Press\/<EM>Globe<\/EM>:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;The rate commission said its decision reduced proposed <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">increases for nonprofit organizations and small local news-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">papers, but would raise the post office&#8217;s planned charges <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">for mailing books and media materials.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Nice priorities!&nbsp; It&#8217;ll cost more for me to&nbsp;send books, so that schools&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/emptyPocketsS.gif\" alt=\"emptyPocketsS\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">can continue to mail me costly presentations imploring me to endow<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">a chair or two, or honoring alumni for their donations, and enticing me <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">to travel to exotic places with famous educators for $20,000 or more <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">per person (double occupancy).&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">One of the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.georgetown.edu\/publications\/gumag\/\"><FONT color=\"black\">pieces<\/FONT><\/A> in today&#8217;s mail proudly announced that &#8220;In fiscal <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">year 2005, <EM>more than 135 alumni<\/EM> took Travel Society trips to such <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">destinations as Costa Rica, Alaska and the Antietam National <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Battlefield.&#8221;&nbsp; That&#8217;s right:&nbsp;thousands upon thousands of glossies <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">were mailed to alumni several times during the year &#8212; at discount <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">mailing rates &#8212; so that &#8220;more than 135&#8221; of those with substantial <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">disposable income could take an Alumni-affiliated trip.&nbsp; What a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">deal.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/> Hey, Harvard: You&#8217;re the most prolific of the Travel-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Guide <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">spammers.&nbsp; It seems like two or three a month, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">sometimes more. Save the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">money, I&#8217;m never going.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;mailboxN&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I don&#8217;t know if UPS and FedEx are right that the United States&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Postal Service is &#8220;using profits from its first-class mail monopoly <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">to fund Priority Mail and Express Mail, which compete with their small <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">package deliveries.&#8221;&nbsp; (<EM>Atlanta <A href=\"http:\/\/www.ajc.com\/news\/content\/business\/1105\/02bizpostal.html\">Journal-Constitution<\/A><\/EM>, &#8220;Snail Mail Costs <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">scheduled to rise,&#8221; Nov. 2, 2005.)&nbsp; But, I do know that the Postal Rate <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Commission wants to make it easier for ACLU and CATO Institute, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Harvard, Georgetown, McQuaid Jesuit High, and all sorts of political <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">action committees to send me stuff.&nbsp;&nbsp; And, I don&#8217;t like it.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Maybe I can&#8217;t stop my <EM>spamma maters<\/EM> from overwhelming my poor <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">mail carrier, and undermining my faith in higher education.&nbsp; But, I&#8217;d<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">like to suggest one requirement for all mailers who want to send <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">discounted or junk-mail, and especially non-profits who get an even <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">bigger break:&nbsp; On each piece of mail state &#8220;<EM>It cost us <\/EM><EM>$_____ to send <\/EM><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>you this item<\/EM>.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; Members of the public might be moved by such <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">information to ask for new priorities at the Postal Rate Commission. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Alumni might let their schools know that they should save that fee, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">plus the expensive production costs, and put us on a &#8220;Do Not Mail <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">List.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; Then, maybe, there&#8217;s a chance of a bequest from me down <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">the line.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/> What ever happened to the category &#8220;third-class mail&#8221;? <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Was somebody afraid of hurting the feelings of the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">senders?&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">The recipients? &nbsp;The Postally Correct <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">crowd strikes <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">again.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Enough said &#8212; and more than enough received.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM><STRONG>p.s<\/STRONG><\/EM>.
