{"id":4118,"date":"2005-09-29T20:58:26","date_gmt":"2005-09-30T00:58:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/09\/29\/moj-please-talk-about-gay-pri"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:54:33","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:54:33","slug":"moj-please-talk-about-gay-priests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/09\/29\/moj-please-talk-about-gay-priests\/","title":{"rendered":"MOJ, please talk about gay priests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a4936'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Since the news reports a week ago that the Vatican is about to ban <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">new gay priests, whether&nbsp;or not they&nbsp;remain celibate&nbsp;(see our prior<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/09\/23#a4895\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">post<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">), I&#8217;ve been hoping the&nbsp;thoughtful contributors&nbsp;at <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.mirrorofjustice.com\/mirrorofjustice\/\"><EM><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Mirror of Justice<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">would&nbsp;discuss the topic.&nbsp; So far, there has only been one <EM>MOJ<\/EM> <A href=\"http:\/\/www.mirrorofjustice.com\/mirrorofjustice\/2005\/09\/gay_priests_and.html\"><FONT color=\"black\">post<\/FONT><\/A><\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">which quotes at length from a <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.thetablet.co.uk\/cgi-bin\/register.cgi\/tablet-01084\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">column<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"> written by a <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">gay and celibate<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">American <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">priest, but offers no commentary. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/maleSym.jpg\" alt=\"maleSym\" \/> Two days ago, a self-proclaimed &#8220;serious Catholic&#8221; sent me a link&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/maleSym.jpg\" alt=\"maleSym\" \/>&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">to this <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.spiritdaily.com\/vaticanandgays.htm\"><FONT size=\"2\">article<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> from a website called <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.spiritdaily.com\/vaticanandgays.htm\">Spirit Daily<\/A><\/EM>, which was apparently written <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\">by its editor <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.maryscall.com\/michael_brown_books.htm\"><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Michael H. Brown<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">&nbsp;&#8212; &#8220;<EM>If the Church Gets Tough &#8212; Very Tough &#8212; <\/EM><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><EM>with DEVIANCE, Pope Will Make His Mark<\/EM>.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; The sender declared that <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;it is an excellent article, written with honesty&nbsp;and a clear understanding of <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">the Church&#8217;s teachings.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">The message of the article is, to my mind, quite remarkable and sad.&nbsp; After <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">declaring <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">that homosexuality is a &#8220;deviance,&#8221; caused by &#8220;demonic&#8221; forces,&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">the article&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">states&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>&#8220;the truth is that those who are homosexual grapple with a<\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>disorder that requires deliverance. It is a spiritual issue. And <\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>while they struggle with that disorder they do not belong in a <\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><EM>position of any spiritual authority.&#8221;<\/EM>&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">After recommending a purge of homosexuality from the clergy, it concludes: <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;We must purify the Church at all costs. Nothing else will <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">work. A gay should <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">not become a priest. He should seek out a good priest for help and deliverance.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">To me, this message is hateful and not the least bit &#8220;Christlike.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jesus, who&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">loved <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">sinners, surely loved non-sinners who merely had <EM>tendencies<\/EM> &#8212;&nbsp;biological <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">urges&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">and preferences apparently given to them by their Creator.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">As a Catholic grammar school pupil, I was taught by nuns and priests that&nbsp;<EM>any<\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">sin of a sexual nature &#8212; including&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;impure thoughts&#8221; not immediately purged <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">from <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">our minds &#8212; was a <EM>mortal<\/EM> sin (leading to eternal damnation if not confessed <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">before <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">death).&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I guess the Vatican believes that gays can never win the fight <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">against such impurity, and that merely abstaining from acting on the impulses <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">is not enough.&nbsp;&nbsp; I would hope that this kind of thinking is quite worrisome to the&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">thinking Catholic, even those who pledge their obedience to their Pope.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/onethirdgray.gif\" alt=\"one third gray\" \/>&nbsp; It&#8217;s estimated that perhaps as many as 30% of <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">priests <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">are gay.&nbsp;&nbsp; For generations (centuries?), an adolescent <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">male&#8217;s <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">lack <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of normal teenage interest in girls was seen by his <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Catholic family and&nbsp;clergy as<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;a sign that he might have a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&#8220;vocation&#8221; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">from God to enter the priesthood.&nbsp; Ironic, huh?<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">As a former Catholic, I know my perspective may not be clear or objective <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">enough.&nbsp; That&#8217;s why I hope to hear from practicing, serious Catholics on <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">this subject.&nbsp; Help me understand.&nbsp; Better yet, help your Pope avoid the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">turning of an <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">ancient form of fear and discrimination into a policy that should <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">have&nbsp;no place in the Church that <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">claims to speak for Christ on earth.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/Benedict16.gif\" alt=\"Benedict16\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the news reports a week ago that the Vatican is about to ban new gay priests, whether&nbsp;or not they&nbsp;remain celibate&nbsp;(see our prior post), I&#8217;ve been hoping the&nbsp;thoughtful contributors&nbsp;at Mirror of Justice would&nbsp;discuss the topic.&nbsp;
