launching an Autumnal Equinox Haiku<\/A><\/EM> page, with haiku and senryu from<\/FONT><\/DIV>

The good folk at “Universe in Motion<\/A>” have put together an interesting <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
page of Autumnal Equinox information and tales.  For example, t<\/FONT>hey <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
remind us: <\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
What’s going to happen? <\/B>Not much really, so don’t wait up <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
until after midnight. It’s a little like an anniversary or a birthday. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
While it is just a geometrical alignment, it is one that reminds <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
us about the passage of time, the motion of the Earth, and the <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
changing of the seasons. It marks the start of autumn.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
What’s so special about it?<\/B>   There are a few special things you <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
can talk about [at school].  <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
As summer wears on, the nights have been growing longer and <\/I><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the days shorter<\/I>. On this date, the night becomes longer than <\/I><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the day!<\/I>  That’s just for us in the Northern Hemisphere. For our <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
friends in Australia [hi, Sarni!], it’s reversed. Spring has just begun <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
for them.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n

\n
A minor point … if you look up the rising and setting time <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of the Sun in the newspaper, it’ll look as if the day is still <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
a bit longer than the night. That’s mostly because “sunset” <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and “sunrise” are defined by the top edge of the Sun, not the <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
middle of it, and the middle of the sun sets (rises) a few <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
minutes <\/FONT><\/FONT>before (after) the edge does. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE>
\n
On this day, the Sun will begin to rise at the South Pole<\/I> after six <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
months <\/FONT><\/FONT>of darkness. It’s going to be daytime there for the next six <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
months!  And yes, there are scientists who are living and working <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
down there now! They have a party to celebrate.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
On this day, the Sun rises directly in the East, and sets directly in <\/I><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
the West<\/I>.. <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
On this day, the Sun passes straight overhead, at the “zenith” for<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
people on the equator, like in Kenya or Ecuador. When the Sun <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
passes straight overhead, there aren’t any shadows!  <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
The equinoxes <\/FONT><\/FONT>(there are two — the Vernal Equinox marks the first day <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
of spring) have a rich place in mythology and ancient traditions. Ancients <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
believed the gods guided the Sun across the sky, and so they paid <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
attention to the way that it moved. (of course, we [at least some of us] <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
now know that what’s <\/FONT><\/FONT>really moving is us). They used a variety of tools to <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
watch that motion.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/FONT>
\n
<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
\"leaves  Autumn holds many treasures and pleasures.   Please take the <\/FONT><\/DIV>

time to enjoy <\/FONT>them (before Heating Degree Days and cost per therm become<\/FONT><\/DIV>
