{"id":4094,"date":"2005-09-19T19:13:55","date_gmt":"2005-09-19T23:13:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/09\/19\/too-much-law-school-too-littl"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:57:23","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:57:23","slug":"too-much-law-school-too-little-haiku","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/09\/19\/too-much-law-school-too-little-haiku\/","title":{"rendered":"too much law school \/ too little haiku"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"a4868\" name=\"a4868\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I spent some time at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/prawfsblawg.blogs.com\/prawfsblawg\/\"><font color=\"#000000\">Prawsfblawg<\/font><\/a> <\/em>this afternoon, where the discussion <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">is &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/prawfsblawg.blogs.com\/prawfsblawg\/2005\/09\/should_we_scrap.html#comment-9593913\">should we scrap the third year of law school<\/a>?&#8221; &#8212; in response <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to the current <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><a href=\"http:\/\/legalaffairs.org\/webexclusive\/debateclub_2yr0905.msp\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font color=\"#000000\"><em>Legal Affairs Debate<\/em> Club topic<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">, featuring <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hofstra.edu\/Academics\/Law\/law_appleman.cfm\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Laura Appleman<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> and <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/prawfsblawg.blogs.com\/prawfsblawg\/daniel_solove\/index.html\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Daniel Solove<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">. <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">I&#8217;m bemused by Laura&#8217;s assertion that law schools have a financial <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">interest in <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">keeping the three-year system, while law professors are interested in the <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">teaching and mentoring benefits of the longer matriculation period.  I weighed <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">in on the (in)appropriateness of reducing the number of law students in response <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a supposed oversupply.  (My contention: there&#8217;s plenty of unmet demand for <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">lawyers, but the profession prices itself out of the reach of most Americans.)<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">                                                                                               <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/087875539X\/qid=1127146525\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/102-9892500-1392132?v=glance&amp;s=books\"><font color=\"black\" face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"1\"><em>the book<\/em><\/font><\/a>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/08\/paperchasecover.gif\" \/>  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/B00008UALL\/ref=pd_sim_b_2\/102-9892500-1392132?%5Fencoding=UTF8&amp;v=glance\"><font color=\"black\" face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"1\"><em>the movie<\/em><\/font><\/a><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">It&#8217;s disappointing that there seems to be no law professors who are haiku poets.<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Lucky for us, though, professors in many other fields have turned their talents <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">to haiku. meant that the core antitrust issue <\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">would not be addressed &#8212;
