Yesterday<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> evening, I had the <em>you<\/em>-nique pleasure of enjoying the prose of the ex-country-<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">singer-mystery-writer (Friedman) in a new book that also features the work<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> of &#8220;our most famous, most wickedly-funny paralyzed cartoonist&#8221; (Callahan). <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/KinkyHoldEm.jpg\" alt=\"KinkyHoldEm\" \/> It&#8217;s the Kinkster&#8217;s newest non-fiction book. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0312331541\/ref=sib_rdr_dp\/102-9892500-1392132?%5Fencoding=UTF8&amp;no=283155&amp;me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;st=books\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Texas Hold &#8216;Em<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><em>: How I<\/em><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><em> Was Born in a Manger, Died in the Saddle, and Came Back as a Horny Toad<\/em><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">(St. Martin&#8217;s Press, 2005).  As a reviewer for the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.borderlandnews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20050619\/LIVING\/506190308\/1004\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">El Paso Times<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> put it, <em>Texas<\/em><\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><em> Hold &#8216;Em<\/em> is: &#8220;another <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">Kinky Friedman classic: quirky and full of Texas trivia.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> Ramon Renter&#8217;a<\/span> <\/span>adds:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;Friedman writes about anything and everything Texas: riding the<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> tour bus with Willie Nelson, witnessing the changing landscape<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> in the Texas Hill Country, growing up in Houston in the &#8217;50s,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> and why Austin City Limits never aired his concert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;As expected, Friedman uses the book to publicize his independent<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> bid to be the next governor of Texas in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;As with previous Kinky Friedman books, you will read this book<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> quickly, smiling and sometimes laughing as if you&#8217;ve had too many<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> shots of tequila. And as the Kinkster likes to say: &#8216;If the horse dies,<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> get off.&#8217; &#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">The Kinkster insists that both Molly Ivins and George W. Bush are behind his<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> 2006 gubernatorial candidacy. (Bill Clinton is a big fan, too, but can&#8217;t vote in<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> Texas).  Since Texas governors don&#8217;t do any &#8220;heavy lifting,&#8221; Kinky figues he<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> could do &#8220;some spiritual lifting&#8221; &#8212; with the reminder that &#8220;the best things in<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> life aren&#8217;t things.&#8221;  He also vows &#8220;to fight the wussification&#8221; of Texas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/KinkyHoldEmN.jpg\" alt=\"KinkyHoldEmN\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Friedman also claims that lawyers come in droves to his book signing gigs <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">(and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">he often signs &#8220;May all your juries be well hung.&#8221;).   His chapter &#8220;Ardor<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> in the Court&#8221; focuses on &#8220;the legendary defense lawyer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.utexas.edu\/law\/academics\/advocacy\/BOABanquet\">Racehorse Haynes<\/a>,&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> who appears to be a big Kinky fan (but seems to have no website).  (You can<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"> see part of the original <em>Texas Monthly<\/em> article <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/preview\/2004-06-01\/friedman\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">, including a good quip from<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> a Racehorse protege, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bafirm.com\/profiles\/dberg.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">David Berg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial\">.) <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/> To be honest, I had never heard of Richard &#8220;Racehorse&#8221; Haynes.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">However, through a little Googling, I found <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/federalism.typepad.com\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">Mike Cernovich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> quoting<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> him in a Comment at <\/span><a href=\"Commen\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">The Legal Underground<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">, so Haynes&#8217; pedigree<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> passes muster with me. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial\">Kinky Friedman is 58 (but reads at the 60-year-old level). The Chapter titledf &#8220;I Don&#8217;t&#8221; &#8212; on why he prefers to remain unmarried and childless &#8212; is worth thefprice of the book (mine&#8217;s borrowed from the Schenectady Public Library), andfI suggest you take up Amazon&#8217;s offer and look inside it, to enjoy a samplingffrom &#8220;I Don&#8217;t&#8221; and other chapters. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/CallahanBest.gif\" alt=\"CallahanBest\" \/> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> I can&#8217;t end this post without a tip of the hat to cartoonist John Callahan. I stayed up late, flipping through various volumes of his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/search-handle-url\/index=books&amp;field-author-exact=John%20Callahan\/102-9892500-1392132\">work<\/a> that I located on my dusty shelves and had smile after guilty smile. Here&#8217;s one of my <a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/gems\/ethicalesq\/CallahanBookStore.jpg\">favorites<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/restrooms.gif\" alt=\"restrooms\" \/><em><strong> p.s<\/strong>.<\/em> I always enjoy sharing a laugh, and last night I exposed a friend of <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">mine for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">the first time to both Kinky and Callahan.   Our laugh muscles<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> were aching <\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">by the time it became too dark out to see the pages.   When <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> I met this women<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> 15 years ago, she would have never laughed at such<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> silly &#8220;male&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">humor.  I was about to take credit for her broadened horizons,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> when I got <\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">the sneaking suspicion that the years and our friendship now<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> make it <\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">acceptable for her to let on that she enjoys bawdy and sick humor,<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> too.  I&#8217;d <\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">hate to think that over all these decades, women have actually<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif;font-size: x-small\"> &#8220;gotten&#8221; all <\/span>the jokes we guys assumed went over their heads.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/haikuguy.com\/issa\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Kobayashi Issa<\/span><\/em><\/a><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"> would surely have loved Kinky and Callahan.<\/span><\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"> Find a couple dozen of his haiku on laughter, <\/span><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/haikuguy.com\/issa\/search.php?keywords=laugh&amp;year=\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">here<\/span><\/em><\/a><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">:<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">a flea jumps<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">in the laughing Buddha&#8217;s<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">mouth<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">the cricket<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;Cricky!
