Law school will test your<br \/>\nstamina <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">and your sanity, leave you with a mountain of debt, and prepare you<br \/>\n(some say rather poorly) for a profession that is universally disliked, and is rife<br \/>\nwith <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ronaldwfox.com\/dissatishtm.html\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">dissatisfied<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">, self-loathing and depressed individuals, who feel helpless to<br \/>\nredeem their lives and selfesteem. (see, <em>e.g<\/em>., the discussion <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/09\/27\/schiltzhappyhealthylawyer\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3853\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">) <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: black\">His clients&#8217; experiences have made lawyer and career <span style=\"color: black\">counselor <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ronaldwfox.com\/\"><span style=\"color: black\">Ronald W. Fox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: black\"><br \/>\nangry every time he hears the words &#8220;law school.&#8221;  He <a href=\"http:\/\/profdev.lp.findlaw.com\/column\/column10.html\"><span style=\"color: black\">explains<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: black\">:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;They entered law school with confidence, talents, smarts, dreams<br \/>\nof justice and high hopes and left three years later with few legal<br \/>\nskills, limited awareness of the values of the profession, little knowledge<br \/>\nof the range of options for a career, not a clue about how to look for work<br \/>\nand a mountain of debt. They were transformed into cynical individuals<br \/>\nwith a false, narrowed perspective of their choices and a dramatically<br \/>\nreduced sense of self-worth.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">As we <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/12\/14\/finding-and-practicing-your-own-values-as-a-lawyer\/\">reported<\/a> last year, lawyer-author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0809225042\/002-9728616-3404061?v=glance\">Steven Keeva<\/a> has made a similar<br \/>\nobservation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;Recent research demonstrates how a majority of first-year students<br \/>\nwho come to school with an inner motivational focus\u2014that is, a desire<br \/>\nto help others, make the world a better place and so on\u2014move rather<br \/>\nrapidly to an external focus, such as earning a lot of money or impressing<br \/>\nothers. Such shifts typically coincide with plummeting levels of well-being[.]&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">[The study, &#8220;Does Legal Education Have Negative Effects on Law Students?<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">Evaluating Changes in Motivation, Values and Well-Being&#8221;, <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">by professors<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">Kennon Sheldon and Lawrence Krieger,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"> was published in <\/span><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><em>Behavioral Sciences<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><em>and Law<\/em>, and may be <\/span><\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.fsu.edu\/academic_programs\/humanizing_lawschool\/images\/undermining.pdf\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">viewed here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">.]<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/boywriting.gif\" alt=\"boy writing\" \/> If you did the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/homework-for-law-school-applicants\/\">Homework<\/a> we suggested last Spring, you already knew the<br \/>\nrisks, and you&#8217;ve done your best to minimize them by figuring out your own motivations,<br \/>\nadding up the true cost, assessing realistic job options if saddled with large debt,<br \/>\nand seeking out unbiased and experienced opinions about law practice.   But, if<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re among the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A56217-2005Apr15.html\/?nav=lb\">multitude<\/a> who didn&#8217;t do the soul-searching and legwork necessary<br \/>\nto choose law school <em>intelligently<\/em>, you better start doing them <em>now<\/em>.  Yes, now, despite<br \/>\nall the other pressures of 1L life. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">Why now?  Because (1) the entire law school experience should be geared toward<br \/>\ndeciding whether law is the right career for you (not your parents or friends!); (2) if the<br \/>\nanswer ends up being &#8220;no,&#8221; you need to cut your losses as soon as possible; (3) if<br \/>\nthe answer &#8212; after really working on the question &#8212; turns out to be &#8220;yes,&#8221; you will<br \/>\nhave both a great sense of relief and a reassuring sense of direction for your legal<br \/>\ncareer; and (4) self-assessment about your career in the law should be a perennial<br \/>\ntask, to help assure you&#8217;ll get the most out of it, while being prepared for a wide variety<br \/>\nof possibly upsetting surprises. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">Derek Haskew <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transformingpractices.com\/lc\/lc2.html\">presents<\/a> what might be the best reason to start your self-assessment<br \/>\n&#8212; asking <em>who you are<\/em> and <em>what you want<\/em> from a law degree and the legal profession &#8212;<br \/>\nas soon as possible:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;[T]he person you are before you enter law school is certain to be different<br \/>\nfrom the one who leaves three years later. Given that, the question becomes,<br \/>\nwhat part of you do you wish to have around to celebrate at graduation? <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;In retrospect, it is easy to see how nearly anyone who is accepted can<br \/>\ngraduate from law school. The challenge is in not being changed so much<br \/>\nby the experience that you forget why you went there in the first place.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">I&#8217;m not trying to scare you, as you start law school.  But, I do want you to feel <em>very<\/em><br \/>\nuncomfortable if you are unable to say that you&#8217;re sure you want to be a lawyer,<br \/>\nthat you know yourself well enough to know your career goals (or at least your<br \/>\nbedrock values), and that you&#8217;ve thought through the practical issues surrounding<br \/>\ngraduating with a large amount of debt (if you will likely have that burden).<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/podiumSN.gif\" alt=\"podiumSN\" \/> Please don&#8217;t think that there are <em>no<\/em> satisfied lawyers.<br \/>\nFor example, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legalunderground.com\/2005\/08\/cheer_up_a_demo.html\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.transformingpractices.com\/mo\/mo.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/profdev.lp.findlaw.com\/column\/article1.html\">there<\/a>.  I think many of the<br \/>\nsatisfied are the kind of folk who would find a way to be<br \/>\ncontent almost anywhere.  Unfortunately, most of us tend<br \/>\nto be easily disappointed and frustrated.  We need to try<br \/>\nharder to avoid career angst and burnout. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">There are some excellent web resources for law students who are trying to find out<br \/>\nwho they are and what they want in a career.  The <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.decisionbooks.com\/assess_students.shtml\">Decision Books<\/a><\/em> Law Student Page<br \/>\nis very good place to start, with many free exercises to help with career assessment.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decisionbooks.com\/pdf\/values1.pdf\"><span style=\"color: black\">Values Inventory<\/span><\/a> might even be a good parlor game for friends on a weekend night &#8212;<br \/>\nletting you sort out and prioritize values, and hear the choices and commentary of your<br \/>\nfellow students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2005\/08\/noyabutsNS.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11898\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2005\/08\/noyabutsNS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"30\" height=\"37\" \/><\/a> Many college websites have an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neiu.edu\/~casdept\/pre-law\/files\/should.html\">Pre-Law Advisor<\/a>, that was put together by<br \/>\nNotre Dame&#8217;s Ava Preacher and uses helpful input from career counselor and lawyer-<br \/>\nauthor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deboraharron.com\/\">Deborah Arron<\/a>.  Note that there is only One Good Reason to go to law school:<br \/>\nYou Want to Be a Lawyer (and actually know what that means).  Take a look at the<br \/>\n&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neiu.edu\/~casdept\/pre-law\/files\/should2.html\">Things to Ponder<\/a>&#8221; list of characteristics of contented lawyers and of those who might<br \/>\nbe ill-suited for the legal profession. Be honest with yourself about how those lists<br \/>\nmake you feel as a law student.  [check our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3679\"><span style=\"color: black\">Homework<\/span><\/a> posting for more sources; and take a look at Ron Fox&#8217;s materials on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawyersatisfactionblog.com\/those-considering-law-school\/\">choosing a law school<\/a>.]<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/> No, none of these tools and exercises will spoon-feed<br \/>\nyou answers and remedies.  Sorry, it will take focused attention<br \/>\nand continuing commitment.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\">Don&#8217;t be surprised if you start wondering whether you&#8217;ve made a bad choice.  Listen to<br \/>\nyour gut and your heart.  Cutting your losses is a lot better than &#8220;investing&#8221; in a career<br \/>\nand lifestyle that will make you (and your loved ones) miserable.   If you think you need<br \/>\nmore time to discover whether a lawyer&#8217;s life is the right one for you, consider asking<br \/>\nfor a leave of absence (after completing your semester or year). It&#8217;s a gem, and I was shocked that a Technorati search <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">turned up only <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unemployedintellectual.blogspot.com\/\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">(very moribund) weblog link to <em>1L of a Challenge<\/em>. After graduation, it is far too easy to allow <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;golden handcuffs&#8221; caused by high mortgages and lifestyle\/family &#8220;necessities&#8221; to <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">become manacles that keep you from finding a fulfilling career and balanced lifestyle. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif;font-size: x-small\">Getting in the habit of making &#8220;sacrifices&#8221; (which are in fact far from draconian) is not <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"font-family: Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\">a lot to expect of responsible young adults.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">As I told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scheherazade.org\/\">Scheherazade<\/a> in a <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/comments?u=ethicalesq&amp;p=273&amp;link=http%3A%2F%2Fblogs.law.harvard.edu%2Fethicalesq%2F2003%2F09%2F16%23a273#a283\">comment<\/a> two years ago:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/handcuffsG.jpg\" alt=\"handcuffsG\" \/> &#8220;To be honest, it seems to me that those handcuffs are self-imposed.<br \/>\nThe key to releasing the cuffs is deciding that a less expensive lifestyle is<br \/>\nacceptable &#8212; including less expensive neighborhood and home, auto,<br \/>\nwardrobe, vacations, hobbies, and social life. It sounds like a rather flimsy<br \/>\nexcuse for someone who does not yet have a family to support to say,<br \/>\n&#8216;I want to use my degree to change the world, but my debt is too high.&#8217; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;Maybe I should blame my generation of middle-class Baby Boomers for<br \/>\nraising, on the whole, a generation of children who feel entitled to most of<br \/>\nthe amenities of a successful middle-class lifestyle, even when first entering<br \/>\ntheir careers [and while still students!]&#8221; <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Commentators such as <em>LSF<\/em>&#8216;s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/legalethicsforum.typepad.com\/blog\/2005\/06\/blame_it_on_the.html#comments\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: #000000;font-size: x-small\">John Steele<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"> scoffed at the article &#8220;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2005\/06\/17\/AR2005061701226.html\"><em><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">Javanomics 101<\/span><\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\">:<br \/>\nToday&#8217;s Coffee is Tomorrow&#8217;s Debt&#8221; (WashPost, June 18, 2005).
