{"id":3874,"date":"2005-05-31T16:57:18","date_gmt":"2005-05-31T20:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/05\/31\/objection-theres-no-juxtaposi"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:57:41","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:57:41","slug":"objection-theres-no-juxtaposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/05\/31\/objection-theres-no-juxtaposition\/","title":{"rendered":"objection, there&#8217;s no juxtaposition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a3909'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">A primary reason that I&#8217;ve always thought haiku is such a <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/12\/07#a372\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">good fit for lawyers<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;is:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><EM><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><STRONG>rules<\/STRONG>: not only are there lots of rules, but they are in dispute, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/EM><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">constantly evolving, often misapplied, and frequently defended <\/FONT><\/EM><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">or attacked beyond all reason. <\/FONT><\/EM><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Thus, beyond the literary and aesthetic pleasures of haiku, lawyers can have fun <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">judging and arguing about which verses are &#8220;real&#8221; haiku, and which are merely<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><A href=\"http:\/\/mansfieldfox.blogspot.com\/2005\/05\/everything-is-haiku-here.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">faux haiku<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Because I know busy lawyers might not read lengthy essays on the definition <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">and writing of haiku I thought I would post a rather quick and painless guide <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><EM><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3908\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">is&nbsp;it or&nbsp;ain&#8217;t it haiku?<\/FONT><\/A><\/EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, which also has links to other sources.&nbsp; Its first version <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">appeared in January, 2005, as a Comment at <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.villainouscompany.com\/vcblog\/archives\/2005\/01\/hurry_sundown_1.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><EM>Villainous Companions<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; It is <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">part of my compaign to rid cyberspace and society of &#8220;pseudo-haiku&#8221; that is being <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">called haiku merely because it is written in verse form,&nbsp;with 5&#8211;7&#8211;5 syllable lines.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">I admit that my own haiku has certain literary pretensions.&nbsp; Nonetheless,&nbsp;&nbsp;<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/sumo.gif\" alt=\"sumo\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">this crusade&nbsp;isn&#8217;t snobbery on my part, but is instead a lawyerly obsession<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">with agreeing on,&nbsp;and complying with, a shared definition of terms, so that<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">communication can be meaningful.&nbsp;&nbsp; My silliness credentials are solid,&nbsp;and I&nbsp;enjoy&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;spam haiku&#8221;, &#8220;<A href=\"http:\/\/www.webmoose.com\/owc\/cafe\/fun-scifiku.php\"><FONT color=\"black\">sci-fi-ku<\/FONT><\/A>&#8220;, &#8220;gothic haiku&#8221;, &#8220;computer-error haiku&#8221;, &#8220;dead-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">baby&nbsp;haiku&#8221;, &#8220;<A href=\"http:\/\/ops.tamu.edu\/x075bb\/humor\/CatHaikus.txt\"><FONT color=\"black\">cat haiku<\/FONT><\/A>,&#8221; etc., but they are virtually never (and usually only <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">accidentally) real haiku.&nbsp;&nbsp; As you&#8217;ll see <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$3908\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">here<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, some might be included in the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">genre of <EM>senryu<\/EM>, but most are light, humorous verses in the poetic family <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">known in Japan as <EM>zappai<\/EM>.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">After reading <EM>is it or ain&#8217;t it haiku?<\/EM>, you should be able to readily distinguish a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">fine example of senryu from two excellent examples of haiku&nbsp;out of&nbsp;this trio of <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">poems by Honored Guest W.F.
